Pause is NOT the same as Cancel — read carefully!
BetterHelp will strongly encourage you to "pause" your membership instead of canceling. Pausing temporarily stops billing but keeps your account active. If you want to fully stop all charges, you must select Cancel, not Pause. Also, consider asking about their financial hardship discount before canceling — they may cut your rate significantly.
Method 1: Cancel via BetterHelp Website
Go to betterhelp.com and log in
Open your browser and navigate to betterhelp.com. Log in with your email and password. If you use the app, you can do this there too — the steps are almost identical.
Open the Menu
Click the menu icon (three horizontal lines, also known as the hamburger menu) in the top corner of your screen. On desktop, you may see a sidebar menu instead.
Go to Account Settings
From the menu, select Account Settings. This will bring you to the page where you can manage your subscription, payment info, and membership status.
Find the Membership section
Scroll down to find the Membership section. Here you'll see your current plan, billing cycle, and next payment date. Click on Membership or Payment Settings to expand the details.
Click "Cancel Membership"
Click the Cancel Membership link or button. BetterHelp will now try to keep you. They'll likely offer a pause option, a discount, or a therapist switch. If you're sure you want out, keep declining these offers.
Confirm cancellation (not pause!)
After working through the retention screens, select Cancel (not "Pause my membership"). You may need to provide a reason. Once you confirm, you should see a confirmation message. Take a screenshot for your records. You will also receive a confirmation email.
Method 2: Cancel via the BetterHelp App
Open the BetterHelp app
Launch the BetterHelp app on your iPhone or Android device and make sure you're logged in.
Tap the Menu, then Account Settings
Tap the menu icon (three lines) in the upper-left corner, then tap Account Settings. Navigate to the Membership or Payment Settings section.
Tap Cancel Membership and confirm
Tap Cancel Membership, work through the retention offers, and confirm your cancellation. Remember: choose Cancel, not Pause. Check your email for a confirmation.
Pause vs. Cancel: What's the Difference?
Pause Membership
- • Billing stops for 1-4 weeks
- • Your therapist match is preserved
- • Chat history remains accessible
- • Billing resumes automatically after pause ends
- • Good if you need a short break
Cancel Membership
- • All billing stops permanently
- • You lose access to your therapist
- • Chat history becomes inaccessible
- • No automatic charges in the future
- • You can resubscribe later (new match)
What Happens After You Cancel BetterHelp?
Access continues until your billing period ends
You can keep using BetterHelp, including messaging your therapist and attending scheduled sessions, until the end of your current paid billing period.
Save your chat history before it's gone
Once your access expires, you lose the ability to view your therapy chat history and session notes. Download or screenshot anything important before your access ends.
Your therapist match is released
After canceling, your assigned therapist is no longer reserved for you. If you resubscribe later, you may be matched with a different therapist, though you can request your previous one if they're available.
You can resubscribe anytime
BetterHelp keeps your account on file. You can come back and resubscribe whenever you're ready. You'll go through the matching process again, but your account information is preserved.
Before You Cancel: Alternatives to Consider
Financial Aid Discount
BetterHelp offers significant discounts for those facing financial hardship. Contact support or check during the cancellation flow — your rate could drop to as low as $40-50/week.
Pause Your Membership
If you just need a break, pausing for 1-4 weeks lets you keep your therapist match and chat history without being charged during the pause period.
Switch Therapists
Not clicking with your therapist? You can switch to a new one for free within BetterHelp instead of canceling entirely. Sometimes the right match makes all the difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between pausing and canceling BetterHelp?
Pausing temporarily stops billing for 1-4 weeks while keeping your therapist match and chat history intact. Billing resumes automatically when the pause ends. Canceling permanently ends your subscription and you lose access to your therapist and messaging history. If you want to stop all charges with no automatic restart, you need to cancel — not pause.
Does BetterHelp offer a financial hardship discount?
Yes! BetterHelp has a financial aid program that can significantly reduce your weekly rate. During the cancellation process, you may see an offer for a discounted rate. You can also proactively reach out to BetterHelp support to inquire about financial assistance. Many users have reported getting 30-50% off their regular rate through this program.
Can I get a refund from BetterHelp?
BetterHelp's refund policy varies. If you cancel early in your billing cycle and haven't used any sessions, you may have luck requesting a refund through their support team. However, prorated refunds for partially used billing periods are not guaranteed. Your best bet is to contact BetterHelp support directly and explain your situation.
Will my therapist be notified when I cancel?
Your therapist will be informed that your subscription has ended, but they won't see the specific reason you gave during cancellation. You can send your therapist a message before canceling if you want to let them know directly or wrap up your conversations.
How much does BetterHelp actually cost?
BetterHelp typically costs between $65 and $100 per week, billed monthly. That works out to roughly $260-$400 per month. The exact price depends on your location, the type of therapy, and any promotions or discounts applied. With financial aid, rates can drop to $40-50 per week.
