How to Cancel Google One, by Plan

Nine storage and AI tiers. One subscription that's been renamed three times in eighteen months. A 15GB cliff that hits the second the meter expires. Pick your plan, we route you to the right path.

Same product, three names

Gemini Advanced (early 2024) Google One AI Premium (mid-2024) Google AI Pro (post-I/O May 2025)

All three are the same $19.99/mo subscription. Your card statement may still read GOOGLE *GEMINI. Cancel at one.google.com regardless (rebrand timeline).

The thing nobody warns you about

The 15GB cliff hits the second your period ends. Files survive. Writing doesn't.

Microsoft gives a 30-day OneDrive grace period. Google does not. The instant your billing period closes, storage reverts to 15GB free. If your account is over 15GB, here is the timeline (per Google's over-quota policy):

Day 0
Existing files stay visible and downloadable. Gmail stops sending and receiving. Drive blocks all uploads and sync. Photos backup pauses. Android device backup stops. Docs, Sheets, and Slides over-quota cannot be edited, by you or your collaborators.
Day 1 to 2 years
Files remain readable. You can keep downloading. Nothing new can come in. Two years is the silent clock that ticks the whole time.
After 2 years
If you are still over quota, Google can delete all content across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. Google sends at least three months notice before the wipe. Many people miss the email.

Before you cancel, if you're over 15GB:

  • 1. Check usage at one.google.com/storage.
  • 2. Pull a Google Takeout archive (Gmail, Drive, Photos, Calendar in one zip; allow 24-48 hours).
  • 3. Delete or migrate enough to get under 15GB before the period ends. Sync-blocked accounts make fast moves harder.

Don't cancel: drop AI but keep your 2TB ($10/mo back)

AI Pro bundles 2TB storage with Gemini 2.5 Pro for $19.99/mo. The 2TB Premium plan, without AI, is $9.99/mo. Same storage, half the price. The cancel UI does not offer this as a path, so people routinely cancel the whole thing when they only wanted a lower tier.

Downgrade math: AI Pro to Premium 2TB

$19.99/mo → $9.99/mo = $120 saved per year.

There's no in-place switch. Cancel AI Pro, wait for the period to end, then re-subscribe to Premium at one.google.com/about/plans. You forfeit the days remaining on AI Pro. If you want AI without the 2TB, the closest option is AI Plus at $7.99/mo (200GB + basic Gemini).

The three actual cancel flows

A. Web / direct Google billing (any storage or AI tier)

Per Google's official cancel doc. Three clicks if your subscription is direct.

1. Sign in at one.google.com. Confirm the top-right profile is the account on the bill. Most "Cancel button missing" complaints are a logged-in mismatch.
2. Click the gear → Cancel membership. If it isn't there, jump to flow B or C.
3. Confirm. Access runs to period end. Storage drops to 15GB the second after.

B. Google Play billing (signed up on Android)

If you started from the Google One Android app or a Play Store offer, the web cancel button doesn't exist for your account.

1. Play Store → profile → Payments and subscriptions.
2. Subscriptions → Google One.
3. Tap Cancel subscription. Play's standard 48-hour refund window may apply for the most recent charge.

C. Apple App Store billing (signed up on iPhone or iPad)

If you started on iPhone, Apple owns billing. Google cannot cancel, refund, or see it.

1. Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Use the Apple ID from sign-up.
2. Tap Google One, then Cancel Subscription.
3. Refunds: reportaproblem.apple.com, not Google. Have your last charge date ready.

Metro by T-Mobile exception: bundled Google One ends immediately on cancel, not at period end.

The Pixel trial auto-convert (set a calendar reminder, not a mental note)

Every Pixel 9-series device ships with a free Google One trial that auto-converts to paid unless cancelled before expiry. Gadget Hacks documented the pattern because so many owners get the first $19.99 charge without remembering they signed up.

Trial length by device

  • Pixel 9 Pro / 9 Pro XL / 9 Pro Fold: 12 months AI Pro free, then $19.99/mo or $199.99/yr
  • Pixel 9: 6 months 2TB free, then $9.99/mo or $99.99/yr
  • Pixel 9a: 3 months 100GB free, then $1.99/mo or $19.99/yr

Cancel at one.google.com any time during the trial. Access continues to the trial end date. Offer terms.

The refund reality (short, because it's mostly no)

Google's official policy: "Google storage plan purchases are non-refundable." Cancel a $99.99/yr 2TB plan in month 3, you keep access through month 12 and Google keeps the $75. No early-cancel fee, no prorate either.

  • Israel: Prorated refund for unused days. The only carve-out Google publishes by name.
  • EU/EEA: Google notes "consumer rights under applicable law that cannot be limited by contract." Within 14 days of an initial purchase, push for a full refund through Support.
  • One-time AI Credit top-ups are non-refundable even inside a trial window (documented bug write-up).

Signed up via Apple or Google Play? Refunds go through the store, not Google. Apple's window is ~14 days at reportaproblem.apple.com; Google Play's is typically 48 hours.

Three gotchas that bite across every plan

1. Family members get zero independent notice.

When the manager cancels, all 5 shared members lose their slice at period close. Members do not get a warning email on their own Google account. First signal is usually Photos backup failing. Send a group text the day you cancel.

2. Collaborators on your over-quota Docs can't edit either.

Per Android Authority's data-fate breakdown: if you stay over 15GB after cancel, any Doc, Sheet, or Slide you own becomes read-only for everyone you shared it with. No in-editor explanation.

3. Google Workspace is not Google One.

If you pay via a company domain or your statement reads GOOGLE *WORKSPACE, you're on Workspace (formerly G Suite). Cancellation is through the Google Admin console, a separate flow entirely.

Questions people actually ask

I subscribed to Gemini Advanced. Is that the same as AI Pro?

Yes. One product, three names in under two years: Gemini Advanced (early 2024), AI Premium (mid-2024), AI Pro (post-I/O May 2025). Cancel at one.google.com whichever name you signed up under.

What happens to my files and photos if I cancel?

Existing files stay readable. New uploads, Gmail send/receive, Drive sync, and Photos backup all stop the moment your account goes over 15GB. If you stay over for two years, Google can delete everything across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. They give at least three months notice before the wipe.

Will I get a prorated refund on my annual plan?

Almost certainly not. Google One storage purchases are non-refundable. Israel is the explicit exception. Some other countries may qualify but Google does not publish the list. US, UK, Canada, and Australia: no prorate.

Why doesn't the Cancel button appear on one.google.com?

You're either logged into the wrong Google account, or the subscription is billed by Apple or Google Play. Check your statement: GOOGLE *Google One is direct, GOOGLE *Google Play is the Play Store, Apple.com/bill is Apple.

The same bundling pattern is running on the other apps you pay for.

Google is not the only company quietly stapling AI onto storage, or storage onto music, and counting on you not to itemise. Subcut spots renewals before they hit and surfaces every recurring charge on your card in about 60 seconds, so you can decide ahead of time, not in the cancel flow.
