How to Cancel Hulu (Every Plan, Bundle, and Billing Source)

Eight ways to be a Hulu subscriber, eight different ways to leave. Live TV users, read the DVR warning first. Everyone else, find your row in the table.

Live TV subscribers: read this first

Cancelling Live TV deletes every Cloud DVR recording. Instantly. No export.

The second Live TV ends (full cancel or downgrade), every recording vanishes. No archive, no export, no 30-day grace. Per Hulu's Cloud DVR help article, recordings are tied to active Live TV.

Screen-record anything you care about first. This is the top Live TV complaint on the JustAnswer thread on missing DVR, and bites bundle-switchers mid-migration hardest.

Step zero: who actually charges your card?

Sign in at hulu.com on a desktop browser (iOS apps can't cancel; Apple's App Store rules block it). Click your profile, then Account. Look at Your Subscription:

  • Plan name plus a live Cancel button: Hulu bills you directly. Use the standalone path.
  • Billed by Apple / Google / Roku / Amazon / Verizon / Spotify / Disney+: cancel button greyed out. Go to the biller.
  • Live TV plan name: handle the DVR question above first.

Skipping this check is why so many people cancel and keep getting charged. See the Roku community thread on Hulu charges and the Verizon thread on Disney/Hulu billing for the receipts.

Standalone Hulu (With Ads or No Ads), Hulu-direct billing

For the $11.99 or $18.99 plan when Account shows a live Cancel button.

1

Sign in at hulu.com in a desktop browser. Android Hulu app works too; iOS doesn't.

2

Profile picture (top-right), Account, scroll to Your Subscription, click Cancel.

3

Pick a reason. Cost-related reasons trigger the $2.99-a-month-for-three-months retention offer (per LowerMySubs' tracker). Pick "too busy" or "watching elsewhere" for a clean exit.

4

Decline the Pause (up to three months) and any discount screens. Click Continue to Cancel each time.

5

Click Cancel Subscription. The Account page should read Your subscription will be canceled. Confirmation email lands within minutes. No email, no cancel: repeat.

Deadline: cancel before 11:59 PM ET the day before renewal. Miss it and Hulu charges another month, no refund.

Hulu + Live TV: full cancel or downgrade to base

One of the few streamers where you can drop channels while keeping the on-demand library. The cost is your DVR.

Option A: Full cancel (drop Hulu entirely)

Use the standalone steps above. Live TV, on-demand, and every add-on end together at cycle end.

Option B: Downgrade to base Hulu, keep on-demand

  1. Sign in at hulu.com, Account, scroll to Your Subscription, click Manage Plan.
  2. Toggle Hulu + Live TV off. Toggle Hulu (With Ads) or (No Ads) on.
  3. Click Review Changes and confirm. Effective at the next billing cycle; DVR recordings vanish at the switch.

The math: $89.99/mo Live TV to $11.99/mo base saves $78/month, $936/year. Watch live sports four months a year? Seasonal switching (Live TV for four, base for eight) saves around $624/year versus year-round. Cross-check the annual streaming plan math.

Hulu inside the Disney Bundle (Duo, Trio Basic, Trio Premium)

If Hulu is part of a Disney Bundle, the hulu.com cancel button does nothing. Disney bills it, Disney cancels it. There is no way to remove only Hulu: cancelling the bundle kills every service at once. Full path at how to cancel Disney+, which also covers Scott v. Disney Platform Distribution (Case No. 5:25-cv-00638), the class action alleging Disney kept charging after cancellation.

The standalone-plus-bundle double-billing trap

Buying the Disney Bundle does not cancel an existing standalone Hulu subscription. The two are independent. Plenty of people pay for Hulu twice for months without noticing. Hulu's "I thought I cancelled" article exists for exactly this case.

If you bought the bundle while you already had Hulu:

  1. Sign in directly at hulu.com (not the Disney+ app).
  2. If Your Subscription shows a plan with a renewal date, you are paying twice.
  3. Cancel the standalone using the steps above. The bundle keeps your Hulu access.
  4. Pull 24 months of statements. Documented overlap is the strongest case for goodwill refunds and the factual core of the Scott class action.

Hulu via Spotify Premium Student

Spotify Premium Student bundles Hulu (With Ads) at no extra cost. Hulu shows the account as billed by Spotify with the Cancel button greyed out. Two paths, very different outcomes:

Drop Hulu, keep Spotify

spotify.com/account, Your Services, Deactivate Hulu. Spotify Premium Student continues. Per Spotify's bundle article.

Drop both (cancel Spotify)

Cancelling Spotify Premium Student also cancels Hulu. To keep Hulu without Spotify, cancel Spotify and re-sign up at hulu.com at the standalone price.

Lose student verification and Spotify rolls to standard Premium; Hulu access drops automatically, nothing to cancel.

Billed through Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, or Verizon

If the hulu.com Cancel button is greyed out or labeled "managed by [provider]," go to the provider.

Apple (iPhone, iPad, Mac)

Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Hulu, Cancel. Only path for Apple-billed Hulu.

Google Play (Android)

Play Store, Profile, Payments and Subscriptions, Hulu, Cancel.

Roku

Home screen, highlight Hulu, press star (*), Manage Subscription, Cancel.

Amazon

Amazon.com, Account, Memberships and Subscriptions, Hulu, Cancel.

Verizon

My Verizon app, Manage Account, Subscriptions. Keep written confirmation: post-cancel charges are documented.

Spotify Student

spotify.com, Account, Your Services, Deactivate Hulu.

Switching, not cancelling: four moves before you bail

Most people who think they want to cancel actually want to pay less. Four moves before giving up Hulu entirely:

  • No Ads ($18.99) to With Ads ($11.99). Saves $84/year. Manage Plan, no cancel needed.
  • Monthly ($11.99) to annual ($119.99/yr). Effective $9.99/month, saves $24/year, but commits 12 months with no prorated refund. Run the annual plan trap math first.
  • Hulu + Live TV to base Hulu. The big one: $89.99 to $11.99 saves $936/year. DVR recordings die in the move.
  • Standalone to Disney Bundle Duo. Duo is $16.99/mo for Disney+ plus Hulu. If you also want Disney+, the bundle beats two standalones. Just cancel the standalone after enrolling, or you pay for Hulu twice.

What about a refund?

Hulu's subscriber agreement is direct: "We do not refund or credit for partially used billing periods, although we may provide such refunds or credits on a case-by-case basis in our sole and absolute discretion." Translation: no auto-refund, narrow exceptions if you ask nicely with documented overlap.

No early-termination fee. Annual subscribers keep access until renewal, no money back. Third-party billed accounts follow Apple, Google, or Amazon refund rules, often more generous; Apple's "Report a Problem" portal is worth a try within a few days of renewal.

Cross-plan gotchas worth a 30-second check

  • Cancelling Hulu cancels every add-on, and they don't come back. Max, STARZ, Paramount+ with Showtime, Cinemax all end with the base plan. Re-subscribing to Hulu doesn't restore them; re-add each one manually at the current price.
  • Only the account holder can cancel. Profile owners (kids, partners) cannot; the cancel button doesn't appear in their sessions.
  • The iPhone Hulu app cannot cancel anything. Apple's 30% rule pushes Hulu to the web. Android works; iPhone uses hulu.com or (for Apple-billed accounts) iOS Settings.
  • Win-back offers beat retention offers. Per the Daily Dot's coverage of Hulu's win-back pricing, customers who actually cancel and wait a few weeks get better discount emails than anyone who clicks through retention.
  • Hulu app retires into Disney+ by end of 2026. Per Yardbarker's 2026 streaming preview, cancel paths today still run through hulu.com; that will likely shift to disneyplus.com.

Questions people actually ask

Can I save Cloud DVR recordings before cancelling Live TV?

No. Hulu has no export. The second Live TV ends (full cancel or downgrade), every recording is gone. Screen-record whatever matters first. Cloud DVR also auto-deletes after nine months even while active.

I had Hulu before the Disney Bundle. Am I being charged twice?

Probably yes. Standalone Hulu and the bundle are independent. Sign in at hulu.com and check Your Subscription. A visible renewal date means you are paying twice. This is the factual core of Scott v. Disney (Case No. 5:25-cv-00638).

Spotify Student: how do I drop Hulu but keep Spotify?

spotify.com, Account, Your Services, Deactivate Hulu. Spotify Premium Student keeps running. Cancelling Spotify also cancels Hulu.

I cancelled but I'm still being charged. Why?

Three causes. You cancelled at hulu.com but Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, Verizon, or Spotify is the real biller. You cancelled the bundle but a parallel standalone Hulu is still running. Or you missed the 11:59 PM ET pre-renewal cutoff. Pull the merchant name off the statement and cancel there.

Will Hulu refund my unused annual months?

By default, no. Annual subscribers keep access until renewal but get no refund. Strongest refund case: documented Disney Bundle overlap.

What happens to add-ons (Max, STARZ, etc.) when I cancel?

All end the moment the base plan ends. Re-subscribing to Hulu doesn't restore them; re-add each manually at the current (often higher) price.

Hulu down. What else is still charging you twice?

The standalone-plus-bundle trap behind Scott v. Disney shows up at Amazon Prime Channels, Apple One, and most carrier add-ons too. Subcut shows every recurring charge on your card in about 60 seconds, no bank login, so you spot the parallel subscription before it ages another year.
