Cancel via Microsoft 365 Admin Center
Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center
Go to admin.microsoft.com and sign in with your administrator account. Important: only admins can cancel subscriptions. If you are just a regular user, you will need to ask your IT admin to handle this.
Navigate to Billing > Your products
In the left sidebar, click on Billing and then select Your products. This shows all your active Microsoft subscriptions in one place.
Find your Teams subscription
Look for Microsoft Teams Essentials or whatever Microsoft 365 plan that includes Teams. Click on the subscription name to open its details page.
Click Cancel subscription
Click Cancel subscription. Microsoft will walk you through a few prompts, possibly showing you what you will lose. They may also suggest downgrading instead. Confirm your decision and you are set.
Heads up: If Teams is part of a broader Microsoft 365 subscription (like Business Basic or Business Standard), canceling means losing all the M365 apps -- not just Teams. Consider whether you need those other tools before pulling the plug.

What Happens After You Cancel Microsoft Teams?
Free Teams remains available
You can still use the free version of Microsoft Teams with chat, video calls (up to 60 minutes), and basic collaboration. Honestly, that covers most people.
Data retained temporarily
Microsoft keeps your data for a limited period after cancellation. Export any important chat histories, shared files, or meeting recordings before your subscription fully expires.
Premium features disappear
Meeting recordings, extended meeting durations, advanced security features, and additional cloud storage all go away when the paid plan ends.
Other M365 apps may be affected
If Teams was part of a Microsoft 365 bundle, canceling also removes access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other included apps. The web versions remain free though.

Can I use Teams for free after canceling?
Yes! Microsoft Teams has a free tier that includes unlimited chat, video calls up to 60 minutes with up to 100 participants, and 5 GB of cloud storage per user. For many small teams, that is plenty.
I am not an admin. Can I still cancel?
Unfortunately, no. Only Microsoft 365 administrators can manage and cancel subscriptions. If you are a regular team member, you will need to contact your IT department or the person who set up the account.
Will I lose my chat history?
Microsoft retains your data for a limited time after cancellation (typically 90 days). We strongly recommend exporting any important conversations, shared files, or meeting recordings before the clock runs out.
Can I cancel Teams without canceling the rest of Microsoft 365?
It depends on your plan. If you have Teams Essentials (a standalone plan), you can cancel it independently. If Teams is bundled with Microsoft 365 Business, canceling the subscription affects all included apps.
Will I get a refund?
Microsoft may offer prorated refunds depending on your plan type and how recently you were billed. Contact Microsoft support at 1-800-642-7676 for specifics about your account.
