Cancel Squarespace on the Website

1

Log in to Squarespace

Head to squarespace.com and sign in with the account that owns the website you want to cancel. If you manage multiple sites, you will need to cancel each one individually. Fun times.

2

Select Your Website

From the main dashboard, click on the website you want to cancel. This opens the site-specific editor and settings panel.

3

Open Settings

In the left sidebar, click Settings. This is your command center for all site-level configuration, from SEO to billing to the nuclear option we are about to use.

4

Go to Account & Security

Scroll down in the Settings panel and click Account & Security. This is where Squarespace keeps the billing and cancellation options -- tucked away at the bottom, naturally.

5

Click Cancel Website

Scroll to the bottom of Account & Security and click Cancel Website. Squarespace will present you with retention offers like discounts or a free trial extension. Decline them if you are set on leaving.

6

Confirm Your Cancellation

Review the cancellation summary, then confirm. You will receive a confirmation email. Your site stays live until the end of your current billing period, so you are not losing anything immediately.

About Your Squarespace Domain

If you purchased a domain through Squarespace, it does NOT get canceled with your site. Your domain stays in your Squarespace account and you can transfer it to another registrar. However, free domains included with annual plans may have a transfer lock during the first year. Check your domain status in Settings > Domains before canceling.

Export Your Site Content First

Before you pull the plug, grab a copy of everything you have built. Squarespace lets you export your content as an XML file -- not perfect, but better than nothing.

Export via Settings

  1. 1. Go to Settings in your site editor
  2. 2. Click Advanced
  3. 3. Click Import / Export
  4. 4. Click Export and choose WordPress format
  5. 5. Download the XML file when ready

What Gets Exported

  • + Blog posts and pages
  • + Gallery pages and text content
  • + Basic page structure
  • - Images (download separately)
  • - Product pages and orders
  • - Custom CSS and design settings

What Happens After You Cancel Squarespace?

Site stays live until billing period ends

Your website remains fully functional and accessible to visitors until the end of your current billing cycle. No immediate impact to your online presence.

Your domain stays in your account

Domains purchased through Squarespace are separate from your website subscription. They remain registered in your account and can be transferred to another registrar or pointed to a new host.

Site goes offline after grace period

Once your billing period expires, your site goes offline. Squarespace keeps your data for a limited grace period (usually around 30 days), during which you can reactivate by resubscribing.

E-commerce data needs manual export

Product listings, customer data, and order history are not included in the standard export. Export your customer list and order data separately from the Commerce panel before canceling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to my domain if I cancel Squarespace?

Your domain stays registered in your Squarespace account. It does not get deleted when you cancel a website plan. You can keep it parked, transfer it to another registrar, or point it to a new hosting provider. If you got a free domain with an annual plan, check whether the transfer lock period has passed before canceling.

Can I get a refund from Squarespace?

Squarespace offers a 14-day refund window for new annual website subscriptions. Monthly plans are generally not eligible for refunds. If you are within 14 days of your annual plan purchase or renewal, contact Squarespace support to request a refund.

Will my site be deleted immediately after canceling?

No. Your site remains live and fully functional until the end of your current billing period. After that, Squarespace keeps your site data for a grace period (typically around 30 days). During this time, you can reactivate your site by resubscribing. After the grace period, your site data may be permanently deleted.

Can I export my Squarespace website to WordPress?

Yes. Squarespace offers a built-in WordPress-compatible XML export. Go to Settings > Advanced > Import / Export > Export. This captures pages, blog posts, and gallery content. Keep in mind that images, products, custom code, and design elements are not included and must be migrated manually.

How do I cancel if I subscribed through the iOS app?

If you subscribed to Squarespace through the Apple App Store, you need to cancel through Apple. Go to iPhone Settings > tap your name > Subscriptions > find Squarespace > Cancel Subscription. The Squarespace website cannot cancel App Store subscriptions.
