How to Cancel Strava (Without Losing a Single Run)

Strava calls it "Downgrade to the Free Plan" because most people don't actually want to leave Strava. They want to stop paying $11.99 a month for features they don't use. Every ride you've ever logged stays. So does your Garmin sync, kudos, clubs, and follower graph.

What survives the downgrade

The actual fear before we get to buttons: am I going to lose what I've built on Strava? No. Here's the honest split.

You keep, for free, forever

  • Every logged run, ride, swim, hike (full history)
  • GPS tracks, maps, photos on past activities
  • Kudos, comments, follows, clubs, posts
  • Top 10 segment leaderboard view
  • Garmin / Wahoo / Apple Watch data sync
  • Manual activity uploads
  • Beacon safety sharing (limited)

You lose at the next renewal

  • Full segment leaderboards (post-2020 paywall)
  • Route planning and Routes tab
  • Fitness and Freshness chart
  • Performance Predictions, grade-adjusted pace
  • Group Challenges (paywalled August 2024)
  • Year in Sport recap (paywalled late 2024)
  • Offline maps and AI coaching

Strava has steadily moved previously-free features behind the paywall since 2020, capped by a silent 2022 price hike from $7.99 to $11.99 a month that Strava later apologized for. That's the backdrop for most cancellations.

Do this first or you'll cancel the wrong thing

Find out who is actually billing you

Sign in at strava.com, open Settings → My Account → Subscription. Three possibilities:

  • "Managed by Apple" → cancel in iPhone Settings.
  • "Managed by Google" → cancel in Google Play.
  • Just a renewal date → cancel on the web (below).

This check is the #1 cause of "I cancelled Strava and they're still charging me" threads on the community hub.

The cancel path, by platform

If Strava bills you directly (web)

1

Sign in at strava.com. Click your profile photo (top right) → Settings.

2

Left sidebar: My Account. Scroll to Subscription.

3

Click Downgrade to the Free Plan.

That's the cancel button. A short survey appears next. Skip it.

4

Confirm. Wait for the confirmation email.

No email within a few minutes means the cancel didn't save. Repeat.

iOS (App Store billing)

  1. iPhone Settings → tap your Apple ID banner.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Strava → Cancel Subscription → confirm.

Android (Google Play billing)

  1. Open Google Play Store.
  2. Profile picture → Payments & subscriptionsSubscriptions.
  3. Strava → Cancel subscription.

When the charge stops (and the refund truth)

You keep paid features until the end of your current billing period, then drop to Free automatically. No prorated refund, no fee, no immediate shutoff.

About refunds: Strava's Terms of Service Section 3 grants a 14-day refund window on the initial annual purchase. That window does not reset on renewals. If you let an annual plan auto-charge for year two, Strava's policy is the renewal stands. Plan to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal. EU and UK readers may have a separate 14-day cooling-off right. Apple-billed purchases: try reportaproblem.apple.com within 90 days.

The reassurance Strava doesn't put in the flow

Your Garmin keeps syncing. Your Apple Watch keeps syncing.

Cancelling Strava does not break the Garmin Connect or Apple Health integrations. Activities keep flowing in after you downgrade. The pipeline is free. The paid features sitting on top of the data are what go.

Questions people actually ask

Will I lose my activity history if I cancel Strava?

No. Every run, ride, swim, and workout stays on your profile, along with GPS tracks, photos, kudos, comments, follows, and clubs. You lose paid features, not your past.

I cancelled on strava.com but I'm still being charged. What?

You originally subscribed through the App Store or Google Play. If the merchant on your statement is Apple or Google, the Strava website cancel does nothing. Cancel in iPhone Settings (Apple ID → Subscriptions) or in Google Play.

Can I get a refund if Strava auto-renewed my annual plan?

Almost certainly no in the US. The 14-day window applies to the initial purchase only and does not reset on renewals. EU and UK users may have a separate cooling-off right. Apple-billed purchases: try reportaproblem.apple.com within 90 days.

I manage the Family Plan. What happens to the other members?

Cancelling ends paid access for everyone on the plan, and Strava doesn't let you hand it off. The clean move: coordinate first, then have a family member start a fresh plan in their own name. Members can leave any time without affecting the rest, but leaving isn't cancelling.

Now that Strava's off the list, what else is lurking?

If Strava's silent 2022 price hike caught you off guard, it's a safe bet something else on your card is doing the same right now. Subcut shows every recurring charge in about 60 seconds. No bank login required.
