Method 1: Cancel via PayPal.com
The fastest and most reliable way to cancel a PayPal subscription is through the PayPal website. This works on any computer, phone, or tablet with a web browser.
Go to PayPal.com and log in
Open paypal.com in your web browser and sign in with your email and password. Make sure you are logging into the account that has the subscription you want to cancel.
Click the gear icon for Settings
In the top-right corner of the PayPal dashboard, click the gear icon (Settings). This opens your account settings where you can manage payment methods, security, and automatic payments.
Click the "Payments" tab
At the top of the Settings page, you will see several tabs. Click Payments. This is where PayPal stores all your payment preferences, including automatic payments and pre-approved merchants.
Click "Manage automatic payments"
Under the Payments tab, find the section labeled Automatic payments (previously called "Pre-approved payments"). Click Manage automatic payments. You will see a list of all merchants and services authorized to charge your PayPal account.
Select the subscription you want to cancel
Click on the merchant name or service you want to cancel. This opens the billing agreement details, showing you the merchant name, status (active or suspended), payment amount, and billing history.
Click "Cancel" and confirm
Click the Cancel button next to the subscription status. PayPal will ask you to confirm. Click Cancel Automatic Payments to finalize. The status will change from "Active" to "Cancelled." You will also receive a confirmation email from PayPal.
Pro tip: After canceling through PayPal, also cancel directly with the service. Canceling the PayPal payment stops them from charging your PayPal, but the service may try to bill you through other means or consider your account unpaid.
Method 2: Cancel via PayPal Mobile App
You can also manage and cancel automatic payments from the PayPal app on your iPhone or Android device. The process is slightly different from the website.
Open the PayPal app
Open the PayPal app on your phone. If you are not already signed in, log in with your email and password or use biometric authentication.
Tap your profile icon
Tap the profile icon in the top-left or top-right corner (depending on your app version). This opens your account menu.
Tap "Payments" then "Manage automatic payments"
Navigate to Payments and then tap Manage automatic payments. If you do not see this option directly, look under Settings first, then Payments. The app layout varies slightly between versions.
Select the merchant and cancel
Tap on the merchant you want to cancel. Review the billing agreement details, then tap Cancel. Confirm when prompted. The status will update to show the payment is no longer active.
Note: If you cannot find the automatic payments option in the PayPal app, try using the PayPal website instead. The web version at paypal.com consistently provides full access to all subscription management features.
What Happens After You Cancel
Understanding what canceling a PayPal automatic payment actually does and does not do is important. Here is what to expect.
The merchant can no longer charge your PayPal
Once you cancel the automatic payment, the merchant loses the ability to bill your PayPal account. Any future charge attempts from that merchant will be declined by PayPal. This takes effect immediately.
Your service access may continue until the billing period ends
Most services let you keep using the subscription until the end of your current paid period. For example, if you paid on January 1st for a monthly subscription and cancel on January 15th, you typically have access until February 1st. However, this depends on the individual service's policy.
You should also cancel with the service directly
Canceling the PayPal payment only stops the payment method. The service itself may not know you canceled. They might try to bill you through another method, send you to collections, or restrict your account. Always log into the service and cancel your subscription there as well.
You will receive a confirmation email
PayPal sends a confirmation email when you cancel an automatic payment. Save this email as proof of cancellation. If you are charged after canceling, this email is your evidence for a dispute.
Getting Refunds Through PayPal
Canceling a subscription does not automatically give you a refund. Here is how the refund process works for PayPal subscriptions.
Contact the merchant first
Your first step should be to contact the service directly and request a refund. Many companies have refund policies and will issue one if you are within their refund window. Check the service's terms of service or contact their support team.
Open a dispute in PayPal Resolution Center
If the merchant refuses your refund request, go to paypal.com/resolutioncenter. Click Report a Problem, select the transaction, and choose the reason. You can dispute unauthorized charges, items not received, or services significantly not as described.
Escalate to a claim if needed
After opening a dispute, you and the merchant have 20 days to resolve it. If you cannot reach an agreement, you can escalate the dispute to a claim, and PayPal will review the case and make a decision. Provide any evidence you have, such as cancellation emails or screenshots.
Know the 180-day window
PayPal allows you to open a dispute within 180 days of the transaction. After 180 days, you can no longer dispute the charge through PayPal. For subscriptions you forgot about, act quickly once you discover them.
PayPal Buyer Protection for Subscriptions
PayPal's buyer protection program can help you in certain subscription-related disputes. Here is what it covers and what it does not.
What IS covered
- Unauthorized transactions you did not approve
- Charges made after you canceled the subscription
- Services significantly not as described
- Services you paid for but never received
What is NOT covered
- Buyer's remorse (you changed your mind about the service)
- Charges you authorized but forgot about
- Disputes filed more than 180 days after the charge
- Payments sent as "Friends and Family"
Common PayPal Subscription Issues
Here are the most common problems people encounter when managing PayPal subscriptions, along with solutions for each.
"I cannot find automatic payments in my settings"
PayPal has reorganized its settings several times. If you cannot find the option, try going directly to paypal.com/myaccount/autopay in your browser. This URL takes you straight to the automatic payments page regardless of how the menu is structured in the current PayPal version.
"I was charged after I canceled"
This can happen if the charge was already processing when you canceled, or if the merchant charged you through a different payment method. Check the transaction details in PayPal to see if it matches the canceled billing agreement. If it does, open a dispute through PayPal Resolution Center with your cancellation confirmation as evidence.
"The cancel button is grayed out"
A grayed-out cancel button usually means the billing agreement is already inactive or there is a pending transaction. Wait until any pending transactions complete, then try again. If the button remains grayed out, try using a different web browser or clearing your browser cache.
"I see a merchant I do not recognize"
Sometimes merchant names in PayPal do not match the brand name you subscribed to. For example, a subscription to a small software company might show the parent company's name or a payment processor name. Click on the unfamiliar merchant to see the billing details and transaction history, which will help you identify what the subscription is for.
"I want to cancel but keep using the service until my period ends"
It is generally better to cancel directly with the service rather than through PayPal for this. Many services have a "cancel at end of billing period" option that lets you keep access. If you cancel through PayPal first, the service may immediately revoke your access since they see a payment failure rather than a proper cancellation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I find automatic payments in PayPal?
Log into PayPal.com, click the gear icon for Settings, then click the Payments tab. Click "Manage automatic payments" to see all merchants authorized to charge your PayPal account. You can also go directly to paypal.com/myaccount/autopay for quick access.
What happens after I cancel a PayPal subscription?
The merchant can no longer charge your PayPal account. However, your subscription with the service itself may not be formally canceled. You should also cancel directly with the service to avoid any issues like being sent to collections or losing your account in bad standing.
Can I get a refund for a PayPal subscription?
PayPal does not automatically refund you when you cancel. Contact the merchant directly to request a refund first. If they refuse and you believe the charge was unauthorized or the service was not delivered, open a dispute through PayPal Resolution Center within 180 days of the transaction.
Will canceling PayPal automatic payments cancel my subscription?
Not necessarily. Canceling the PayPal payment stops the merchant from billing your PayPal, but they may try to bill another payment method or consider your account unpaid. Always cancel with both PayPal and the service directly to ensure a clean cancellation.
How do I find hidden PayPal subscriptions I forgot about?
Go to PayPal Settings, then Payments, then Manage automatic payments. This page lists every billing agreement, both active and inactive. Check the Active tab for currently running subscriptions. Also review your PayPal transaction history for recurring charges that might not show up as formal billing agreements.
Does PayPal buyer protection cover subscriptions?
PayPal buyer protection covers unauthorized transactions and services that were not received or were significantly not as described. It does not cover charges you authorized but forgot about, or simple buyer's remorse. You have 180 days from the transaction date to file a dispute through PayPal Resolution Center.
