How to Cancel Audible (and Not Lose Your Credits)
The cancel is five minutes on the web. The story is the credits: spend them before you click, or Audible takes them back. Your purchased audiobooks stay yours either way.
Do this before anything else
Step zero: spend every credit on your account.
Audible's Conditions of Use say it plainly: "Credits expire immediately upon the cancellation or termination of your membership unless used prior to cancellation or termination." No grace period. Redeem every credit (pre-orders count), then come back. Redeemed books stay in your library after cancellation, no membership required.
One exception: App Store and Google Play subscribers' credits do not expire on cancel. That's buried in Audible's help docs.
First, where do you actually get billed?
Three billing paths, three cancel locations. Wrong door, you keep getting charged.
Billed by Amazon / audible.com (most users)
Use the web steps below.
Billed by Apple (you signed up in the iOS app)
iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Audible → Cancel. Cancelling on audible.com does nothing here. App Store subscribers also pay about a dollar more ($15.99 vs. $14.95).
Billed by Google Play (Android signup)
Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Audible → Cancel. audible.com cannot stop a Play charge.
Not sure? Check the email receipt for your last charge. The "from" address tells you who billed you.
The web cancel, step by step
For Amazon-billed members. About five minutes including retention screens.
Open audible.com, not the app
The mobile app has no cancel button. Sign in on the web.
Top-right name menu, then Account Details
Hamburger menu on mobile browser.
Click "Cancel membership", not "Switch Membership"
Audible promotes a bright "Switch Membership" button and demotes Cancel to a small text link, documented for years by the Deceptive Patterns Hall of Shame. Pick the small link.
Scroll past the loss-aversion and retention offer
Audible buries "No thanks, continue cancelling" at the bottom, then offers a discount (often 3 months at 50% off, one deal per 12-month window). Scroll past both; click Continue to Cancel.
Confirm, then watch for the email
Confirmation lands within a minute. No email, it didn't save.
Credits, refunds, library: the after-cancel rules
Access runs to period end. No prorated refund per Audible's TOS: "If you cancel your membership or subscription, you will not receive a refund of any fees already paid." Annual plans get no mid-year refund either, and pause isn't available on annual (only Premium Plus monthly pauses up to 3 months once a year). Unspent credits forfeit at period end; App Store and Google Play credits are the exception.
Your purchased library is permanent: anything bought with a credit or cash stays after cancellation, no membership required. Only the Plus Catalog (rotating streaming titles) disappears. A 2025 California class action under the state's Digital Property Rights Transparency Law argues those books are licensed, not owned outright.
Questions people actually ask
Do I lose the audiobooks I already bought?
No. Books bought with a credit or with cash stay in your library forever. Only the Plus Catalog (Originals, rotating streaming titles) disappears, because that part was always rental.
What happens to my unused credits?
They forfeit at billing-period end under Audible's Conditions of Use, no grace window. App Store and Google Play subscribers are the exception. A 2024 class action (Hollis v. Audible) is challenging the broader 1-year credit expiration under Washington gift card law and survived dismissal in early 2025.
I subscribed in the iPhone app. Why won't audible.com cancel?
Apple bills it, not Audible. Cancel in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Audible.
Is Audible the same as Amazon Prime?
No. Amazon owns Audible but bills it as a completely separate subscription. Cancelling one does not cancel the other. See our Amazon Prime cancel guide for that flow.
If you're auditing the rest of the Amazon stack
Audible is gone. What else is auto-renewing?
The average person finds two to four forgotten subscriptions the first time they actually look. Subcut shows every recurring charge on your card in about 60 seconds, no bank login required.
