Cancel ChatGPT Plus on the Website
Log in to ChatGPT
Go to chatgpt.com in your web browser and sign in with the account that holds your Plus subscription. Make sure you are logged into the correct account, especially if you have multiple OpenAI accounts for personal and work use.
Open Settings
Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen. In the menu that appears, select Settings. This opens the Settings panel where you can manage your account, data controls, and subscription details.
Go to Manage my subscription
In the Settings panel, find the Subscription or My Plan section. Click Manage my subscription (or the Manage button). This redirects you to the Stripe billing portal, which is the payment processor OpenAI uses. The page will show your current plan and next billing date.
Click Cancel Plan
On the Stripe billing page, click Cancel Plan. You will be asked to confirm the cancellation. Click the confirmation button to finalize. You will see a message confirming that your subscription has been canceled and showing the date your access will end.
Tip: Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid being charged for the next period. OpenAI does not issue refunds for partial months.
Subscribed Through Apple or Google?
If you signed up for ChatGPT Plus through the iOS App Store or Google Play Store, you must cancel through those platforms instead. The ChatGPT website will not show a cancel option because Apple or Google manages your billing directly.

What Happens After You Cancel ChatGPT Plus?
You keep Plus features until your billing period ends

Your chat history and custom GPTs are preserved
All your conversations, saved chats, and custom instructions remain on your account. Custom GPTs you created are also preserved and will be fully accessible again if you resubscribe in the future.
You are downgraded to the free tier
Once your billing cycle ends, you lose access to GPT-4 and advanced models. You will be switched to the free tier, which has limited model access and slower response times during peak hours. You can still use ChatGPT, but with reduced capabilities.
API billing is completely separate
Canceling ChatGPT Plus has no effect on your OpenAI API account. If you also use the API for development, those credits and billing continue independently. Manage API billing separately at platform.openai.com.

What happens to my custom GPTs if I cancel?
