How to Cancel ChatGPT Plus

The cancel button is one tap. The hard part is figuring out who is actually charging you: Apple, Google, or OpenAI. Cancel on the wrong one and the $20 keeps coming.

Step zero: open your receipt

Search your email for "ChatGPT" and check the sender of the latest receipt.

  • From Apple: iOS app signup. Apple has the money.
  • From Google Play: Android signup. Google has the money.
  • From OpenAI or Stripe: chatgpt.com signup. OpenAI has the money.

No receipt? Check your statement for "OpenAI", "Apple.com/Bill", or "Google *ChatGPT". If both Apple and OpenAI show up, see double-billing below.

Cancel through the channel that billed you

Apple billed you (iOS App Store)

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone signed in to that Apple ID.
  2. Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
  3. Find ChatGPT in the list and tap it.
  4. Tap the red Cancel Subscription button and confirm.

The chatgpt.com cancel page will not stop this. OpenAI's iOS article sends you to Apple too.

Google billed you (Android)

  1. Open the Play Store app and tap your profile icon (top right).
  2. Choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Tap ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription at the bottom.
  4. Pick a reason if prompted and confirm.

Desktop alternative: play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions.

AI

OpenAI billed you directly (web)

  1. Sign in at chatgpt.com.
  2. Click your profile icon (bottom left), then Settings.
  3. Open Account, then Manage Subscription.
  4. In the Stripe portal that loads, click Cancel Plan and confirm.

Same path for ChatGPT Pro ($200/mo) and Team ($25/seat/mo, no proration on mid-term seats). OpenAI's web cancel article.

The ChatGPT iOS app launched May 18, 2023. Plus subscribers from before then are on the web path. Note: API credits are a separate prepaid product. The Plus cancel does not touch API billing.

The thing OpenAI buries in a help article

Apple will keep trying to charge you after you re-subscribe on the web.

The trap: you subscribed on your iPhone. A card expires, the Apple charge fails, access cuts off. You sign up on chatgpt.com instead. Pay OpenAI $20. Access returns.

Apple is not done. Per OpenAI's own double-billing article, Apple keeps retrying the failed iOS charge for weeks. The moment you update your payment method for anything, Apple charges. Now you have two Plus subscriptions, and only one shows in chatgpt.com Settings.

The fix: before signing up on the web, cancel the iOS subscription in iPhone Settings even if it looks inactive. Apple Community threads are full of people who got the order wrong.

When the charge actually stops

On all three channels, cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal or that charge processes anyway.

No prorated refund in the US. OpenAI's Services Agreement says fees are non-refundable except where required by law. EU, UK, and Turkey residents get a 14-day cooling-off period. Discretionary approval elsewhere sits below five percent.

Questions people actually ask

Why does chatgpt.com show my subscription but no cancel button?

Because you subscribed via iOS or Google Play, not OpenAI directly. The web Cancel Plan button only appears for direct subscribers. Cancel in iPhone Settings or the Play Store instead. This is the top-asked question in the OpenAI forum.

I cancelled on chatgpt.com but Apple still charged me. What happened?

Apple may still be retrying an old iOS subscription independently. Cancel it in iPhone Settings, Subscriptions, ChatGPT. For a refund on a processed charge, use reportaproblem.apple.com.

Can I get a refund for the unused part of my month?

Not in the US. OpenAI's Terms say payments are non-refundable except where required by law. EU, UK, and Turkey residents get a 14-day cooling-off window. Apple-billed charges go through Apple's discretionary refund flow.

I deleted the ChatGPT app. Why am I still being charged?

Deleting an app does not cancel its subscription. App Store and Play Store subscriptions live at the operating-system level. The icon comes off your screen. The $20 does not.

Now that ChatGPT is sorted, what else is double-billing you?

The Apple-vs-web split is not unique to ChatGPT. Subcut spots every recurring charge on your card in 60 seconds and flags duplicates before they bill again.
