How to Cancel Claude Pro (and Max) in Under 2 Minutes
Anthropic runs one of the cleanest cancel flows in AI: three clicks, no retention agent, no discount, no survey. The one thing to get right is which platform you originally subscribed on.

Where you signed up is where you cancel.
Subscribed at claude.ai? Cancel on the web. Subscribed inside the iOS app? Apple is your biller and the website Cancel button does nothing. Inside Android? Google Play. Get this wrong and you stay subscribed.
If you subscribed on the web (claude.ai)
Sign in to claude.ai, click your initials (lower left)
Use the same account that holds the subscription. The initials live in the bottom-left of the sidebar, not the top right.
Settings → Billing
Confirm your active plan: Pro ($20/mo or $204/yr), Max 5x ($100/mo), or Max 20x ($200/mo). Cancel button is the same for all three.
Click Cancel and confirm
No discount interstitial, no pause offer, no chat agent. Plan expires on the next renewal date and you keep access until then. Cancel at least 24 hours before that date or you'll be charged for the next cycle.

If you subscribed in the app
iOS (Apple)
Settings app on your iPhone → tap your name at the top → Subscriptions → Claude → Cancel Subscription. Refunds go through Apple Support, not Anthropic.
Android (Google Play)
Play Store app → tap your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Claude → Cancel subscription.
The thing Anthropic doesn't put in the cancel flow
Cancelling Claude Pro does not cancel your API bill.
Two products, two bills. claude.ai is the chat subscription; console.anthropic.com is the developer API, billed by the token. To stop the API side, log in to console.anthropic.com, go to Settings → Billing → Plans, and turn off auto-reload or set your monthly budget to $0. Anthropic spells the separation out, but the claude.ai cancel flow never mentions it.
When the charge actually stops
Paid features run to period end, then the account drops to Free with chat history preserved. Annual ($204) keeps Pro for the rest of the year, no prorated refund. Consumer Terms 6(3): "your fees will not be refunded." Exceptions: EU/UK 14-day withdrawal; Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan 7 days. If Anthropic terminates without cause, pro-rata refund (Section 12). The annual plan trap does the math on upfront discounts.
On Max, thinking "downgrade"?
Downgrading Max to Pro has cost users access to Max-era artifacts (source). Cancel and resubscribe to Pro instead. Full cancel preserves chat history on Free.
Questions people actually ask
I cancelled on claude.ai but Apple still charged me. What happened?
You subscribed through the iOS app, so Apple is the biller. The website Cancel button does nothing for App Store subscriptions. iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Claude → Cancel. Same logic for Android via Google Play.
I cancelled Pro. Why am I still billed for API usage?
Pro at claude.ai and API credits at console.anthropic.com are separate products with separate bills. Log in to console.anthropic.com, go to Settings → Billing → Plans, and turn off auto-reload (or set the monthly budget to $0).
I run a Claude Team workspace. Why can't I see a Cancel button?
Only an Owner or Primary Owner can cancel a Team subscription, through Organization Settings → Billing. Members can remove themselves, but the org keeps billing until an Owner cancels. Five-seat minimum.
Footnote: Bartz v. Anthropic settled for $1.5B in September 2025 over training-data copyright (background). Unrelated to subscription mechanics.
If you are deciding between AI subscriptions
Now that Claude is off the list, what else is lurking?
Most people who cancel one AI subscription discover two or three more they forgot about, plus an API auto-reload. Subcut shows every recurring charge in about 60 seconds.
