How to Cancel Duolingo Plus, Super, or Max

Three billing platforms, four tiers, one decision table. Find your row, follow its steps, skip the rest.

Before you do anything else

Your streak survives. This is the number one reason people keep paying when they want to stop.

Cancelling Super or Max does not reset, freeze, or delete your streak. The streak lives on your Duolingo account, not your paid tier. Duolingo says it plainly: "When you start or end a subscription, your learning progress and streak will not be affected." You lose unlimited hearts, the no-ads lessons, and (on Max) the AI features. The streak stays.

Not sure which plan you have?

iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions. Android: Play Store, profile icon, Payments and Subscriptions. Web: duolingo.com, profile icon, Settings, Subscription tab. The line item label is your tier.

The decision table

Find your tier and where you originally subscribed. That row has your cancel path.

Tier Typical price Where you cancel Access ends Refund realistic?
Duolingo Plus
Legacy name, pre Aug 2022
Same as Super Same as Super. The line item is now labelled Super Duolingo. End of billing period No, via Duolingo. Apple or Google may grant.
Super Duolingo $12.99/mo or $83.99/yr Wherever you subscribed: iOS Settings, Play Store, or duolingo.com End of billing period No prorated refund. Apple sometimes grants. Google Play: 48 hours.
Duolingo Max $29.99/mo or $168/yr Same platforms as Super. Separate line item. End of billing period Same as Super. Apple is the realistic path.
Super Family
Up to 6 members
$119.99/yr (annual only) Manager only, through their original billing platform End of annual period for every member No proration. All members revert to free.
Max Family ~$240/yr (annual only) Manager only, original billing platform End of annual period Apple discretion only.

Prices from Duolingo's public pricing pages and verified third-party listings, May 2026. Family plans are annual only; there is no monthly Family option.

The rule that breaks most Duolingo cancellations

You cancel where you subscribed. Not where the app lives.

If you tapped Subscribe inside the iPhone Duolingo app, Apple is your biller and only Apple can stop the charges. The cancel button on duolingo.com will not exist for your account. Same logic for Google Play. The most documented Duolingo cancel failure on Apple's community forum is users hitting the website, seeing no cancel option, assuming they are done, and getting charged at renewal.

Quick check: your bank statement. The merchant (APPLE.COM/BILL, GOOGLE *DUOLINGO, or DUOLINGO INC) is who you cancel with.

Super Duolingo (and old Plus)

Most readers want this path. Duolingo renamed Plus to Super in August 2022; same subscription, new label. Pick the platform you actually subscribed on.

iOS / App Store billing

1

Open iOS Settings (not the Duolingo app)

The cancel button is not inside Duolingo. Apple keeps it in Settings.

2

Tap your name, then Subscriptions

Top of the Settings screen. If multiple Apple IDs share the device, make sure you are on the one that paid.

3

Tap "Super Duolingo"

If you have Max too, you will see both. Make sure you tap the right one. Two separate line items, two separate cancels.

4

Tap Cancel Subscription, confirm

Apple emails a confirmation. Access continues to the end of the current period. No retention screen, no offer, no agent.

Android / Google Play billing

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon (top right), then Payments and Subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Tap Duolingo. If Super and Max are both listed, pick the right one.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm. Google emails confirmation; access runs to period end.

Web / direct billing on duolingo.com

  1. Sign in at duolingo.com on a browser.
  2. Click your profile icon, then Settings.
  3. Click the Subscription tab. (No Cancel button here means you did not subscribe on the web. Go back to the App Store or Play Store path.)
  4. Click Cancel Subscription. Duolingo shows a one-question "why are you leaving" survey. You can skip it. Confirm the cancel. Done.

Plan-specific gotcha: every Super cancel screen flashes "You have a 412-day streak" before the confirm button. People quit halfway through and panic. The streak is safe. See the green callout up top.

Duolingo Max

Max launched in March 2023 as the AI tier above Super (Roleplay, Explain My Answer, the Video Call feature). It bills the same way Super does, with one wrinkle.

Max gotcha

Max and Super appear as two separate subscription line items in the App Store and Play Store. People who upgraded from Super to Max sometimes end up paying for both, because the upgrade did not cleanly retire the old entry. This is a documented complaint pattern. Before cancelling either, scroll your subscriptions list and confirm whether one or two are active.

Mechanically, cancelling Max is identical to Super. Same Settings path on iOS, same Play Store path on Android, same Subscription tab on the web. The only difference is the line item you tap: "Duolingo Max" at the Max tier price ($29.99/mo or $168/yr).

If you have both and you only want to drop Max, cancel only the Max line item. Super continues, and next month you are a Super subscriber without the AI features. That is the "downgrade" path Duolingo doesn't surface anywhere.

Super Family (and Max Family)

Family plans are annual only and have a manager: the account that originally bought the plan. Only the manager can cancel for the whole group.

If you are the manager

Cancel through the platform you originally subscribed on (Apple, Google, or web). The cancel surface is the same as for individual Super. When the current annual period ends, every member account drops to the free tier on the same day.

Tell your members before the renewal date. Duolingo does not notify them in advance, and people lose Super features mid-lesson with no warning.

If you are a member

You can leave the family group from your own Duolingo settings, which removes only you. The manager keeps paying for the remaining slots. You drop to free.

A member cannot cancel the whole plan or stop the manager's renewal. That is the manager's call.

Plan-specific gotcha: family plans are annual and non-prorated. Cancelling in month 2 keeps all six seats through month 12 and refunds nothing. The same math from the annual plan trap applies. Set a calendar reminder for the renewal date and decide then.

Wait. Cancel, or downgrade?

Plenty of readers searching "cancel Duolingo Max" do not want to stop learning Spanish. They want to stop paying $29.99/month. Different problems, different fixes.

  • Max to Super: Cancel the Max line item only. Next renewal you pay $12.99 instead of $29.99, keep unlimited hearts and ad-free lessons, lose only the AI features.
  • Super monthly to Super annual: If you have used Super consistently for six months, the annual plan breaks even around month 6.5. Switch on the platform's subscription screen rather than cancelling and resubscribing.
  • Super to free: Cancel. Streak survives. Lessons still work. Ads and limited hearts return. Fine for casual learners.

Cross-plan gotchas that cost people money

The free trial auto-converts with no real warning.

Duolingo's trial is supposed to email a notice two days before the annual charge. Multiple Apple Community threads document users who got the $83.99 or $168 charge with no email at all. Skip Duolingo support (the documented response is denial) and go straight to reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple typically refunds in 2 to 4 days.

Annual is non-refundable from Duolingo.

Stated policy: all payments are non-refundable, no proration. Cancel month 3 of a 12-month plan and you keep access for nine more months and get $0 back. Apple and Google occasionally override this; Duolingo support does not.

Questions people actually ask

Will I lose my streak if I cancel Super or Max?

No. The streak is tied to your Duolingo account, not your subscription tier. Duolingo's Help Center says it plainly: starting or ending a subscription does not affect your learning progress or streak. The fear of losing a multi-year streak is what keeps thousands of users paying when they would otherwise stop.

I used to have Duolingo Plus. Where did that go?

Duolingo renamed Plus to Super Duolingo in August 2022. Same product, new label. If you bought through the App Store before then, the line item in iOS Settings will now read "Super Duolingo." The cancel path is identical to current Super.

I have Super and Max both billed to my Apple ID. Do I cancel each separately?

Yes. They appear as two distinct entries on Apple's Subscriptions screen and on Google Play. Cancelling Super does not cancel Max and vice versa. If you only want one to stop, tap only that one.

Can a family member cancel the Super Family plan?

Members can leave the family group (from their own Duolingo settings), which drops only them to the free tier. To stop the renewal charge entirely, the manager has to cancel through the platform they originally bought on. Members cannot end the plan for the group.

Can I get a prorated refund on an annual plan?

Not from Duolingo. Their policy is non-refundable with no proration. The realistic refund path is platform-dependent. Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com, granted at Apple's discretion, usually 2 to 4 days. Google Play: refund request within 48 hours of the charge. After 48 hours on Google Play, refunds are rare.

I cancelled on duolingo.com but I am still being charged. What happened?

You subscribed through the App Store or Google Play. The duolingo.com cancel button only works for direct web subscriptions. Check your bank statement: if the merchant is APPLE.COM/BILL or GOOGLE *DUOLINGO, cancel inside iOS Settings or the Play Store. This is the most common Duolingo cancel mistake.

The "wrong platform" trick is running on more than Duolingo.

Apps everywhere route their billing through Apple or Google so the in-app cancel button can quietly not exist. Subcut shows every recurring charge on your card and tells you which platform is actually billing each one, so you can stop the renewal before it hits, not after.
