1

Sign in to GitHub

Go to github.com and sign in with the account that has the Copilot subscription.

2

Go to Billing & Licensing

Click your profile picture in the upper-right corner of any page, then click Settings. In the sidebar under the "Access" section, click Billing & licensing, then select Licensing (or Plans and usage depending on your platform).

3

Open the Manage Subscription Dropdown

In the GitHub Copilot section, find the Manage subscription dropdown on the right side and click it to expand the options.

4

Click Cancel Subscription

Select Cancel subscription from the dropdown, then confirm by clicking Cancel Copilot Pro (or Cancel Copilot Pro+). Your plan will be canceled at the end of your current billing cycle, and you will be downgraded to Copilot Free.

What Happens After You Cancel GitHub Copilot?

You keep Pro features until your billing cycle ends

GitHub does not remove Copilot access immediately. You can continue using all Pro features including unlimited completions and chat until the end of your current billing period.

You are downgraded to Copilot Free

After your billing period ends, you automatically switch to Copilot Free, which provides limited AI code completions and chat interactions per month. Your code and repositories are unaffected.

Editor extensions keep working (with limits)

The Copilot extension in VS Code, JetBrains, or other editors stays installed but switches to the free tier with limited completions. You do not need to uninstall anything.

You receive a confirmation email

GitHub sends a confirmation email when your cancellation is processed. Keep this for your records in case of any billing discrepancies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel during my free trial?

Yes. You can cancel your Copilot Pro trial at any time during the 30-day trial period without being charged. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the trial.

Can I cancel if my organization provides Copilot?

No. If your Copilot access is assigned through an organization or enterprise account, you cannot modify or cancel the plan yourself. Your organization's admin manages Copilot seats and billing.

What is the difference between Copilot Free and Copilot Pro?

Copilot Free provides limited AI code completions and chat interactions per month. Copilot Pro offers unlimited completions, access to more AI models, and priority access to new features. Your repositories and code are identical on both plans.

What about students and open source maintainers?

Verified students, teachers, and maintainers of popular open source projects may have free Copilot Pro access. If you have this free access, there is no subscription to cancel, as you are not being charged.
