How to Cancel Headspace (And Why Half of Users Can't)

Headspace has one of the cleanest cancel buttons in wellness software. The catch is that a huge share of users never see it, because they didn't sign up the way they think they did.

Step 0: the 30-second diagnostic

Who is actually billing you?

Five paths. Pull up your card statement; the line item tells you which path is yours. Cancelling in the wrong place is the most common Headspace complaint on the BBB record.

Charge line item Path
"Headspace"Direct web (A)
"Apple" / "iTunes"iOS Settings (B)
"Google" / "Google Play"Play Store (C)
"Spotify"Spotify Student bundle (D)
No charge (Aetna, Kaiser, UHC, Cigna, Microsoft, etc.)Contact HR (E)

The five paths

A

Direct web subscriber ($12.99/mo or $69.99/yr)

Sign in at headspace.com/subscription/manage. Tap CANCEL MEMBERSHIP. Confirm. Two clicks, done. If the button is missing for any reason, email [email protected] and ask, per Headspace's own help article.

B

Apple App Store subscriber

iPhone Settings, tap your name, Subscriptions, Headspace, Cancel Subscription. If you want a refund, you have to ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Headspace cannot refund App Store purchases at all, regardless of how recent.

C

Google Play subscriber

Play Store, menu, Subscriptions, Headspace, Cancel subscription. Same rule on refunds: it's a Google Play conversation, not a Headspace one.

D

Spotify Premium Student bundle

Go to spotify.com/account/subscription. The Headspace access is bundled with Spotify Premium, so the only way out is through Spotify. Heads up: cancelling the bundle cancels Spotify too. If you want to keep Spotify, you cannot keep only the Headspace half (see our Spotify cancel guide).

E

Employer or health-plan user (no button exists)

Headspace for Work covers Aetna, Kaiser, UHC, Cigna, Microsoft, and many more. Per TOS Section 3.1, access is controlled by your employer or insurer. You cannot self-cancel in the app or by emailing [email protected]. Contact HR or your benefits administrator. For employer-sponsored therapy and coaching (Headspace Care, post-Ginger-merger), use [email protected].

The thing Headspace doesn't put in writing

The 30-day refund window isn't in the TOS.

TOS Section 2.3(c) states: "You will not have the right to receive a refund for any Subscription unless otherwise required by applicable law." The 30-day refund is a support practice, not a contractual right. If you accidentally renewed at $69.99 (or the grandfathered $95.88), email [email protected] fast and politely. After 30 days, you're relying on goodwill.

Paid access runs through the end of the current billing period, then drops to free. Stats and streaks stay; Sleepcasts and Premium meditations stop. Family plan: when the account holder cancels, all six members lose Premium together at period end. Student plan (web, not Spotify bundle) cancels via the same path A. Tell anyone sharing first.

Questions people actually ask

I got Headspace free through my employer or insurer. How do I turn it off?

You can't on your own. Per TOS Section 3.1, sponsored access is controlled by the sponsor. Email HR. Access usually ends automatically when you leave the company.

I accidentally subscribed to the $69.99 annual plan. Can I get a refund?

Maybe. The TOS says no refunds. Support has historically granted a 30-day window for first-time annual subscribers. Email [email protected] promptly. Apple or Google purchases must go through their refund flows.

Will my streak and stats go away?

No. The account drops to free tier. Premium content locks, but streaks and history stay attached to your login.

Can I pause my subscription?

No. Headspace has no pause feature, per their help article. Cancel now, resubscribe later at full price.

Now that Headspace is sorted, what else is lurking?

The "wrong billing platform" trap that catches Headspace users catches you on plenty of other apps too. Subcut shows every recurring charge on your card in about 60 seconds, with the actual platform (Apple, Google, direct) labelled clearly so you cancel in the right place the first time.
