How to cancel NordVPN, and actually get your money back
NordVPN's 30-day money-back guarantee sounds simple. It is not. The guarantee applies only to your initial purchase, never to a renewal, and refunds are not self-serve: you have to ask in live chat. Most angry NordVPN forum posts are from people who missed that window or paid through a channel where Nord cannot issue a refund anyway. The good news: there are three legitimate routes to recover money, the cancel flow is a 5-click web form, and EU users have rights US support agents will not volunteer.
The 30-second version
Cancel auto-renewal at my.nordaccount.com → Billing → Subscriptions → Manage → Cancel Auto-Renewal. Then, if you are inside 30 days of your initial purchase, open live chat and request the refund separately. Cancellation alone refunds nothing.
If you bought through the Apple App Store, Google Play, or a third-party retailer, the cancel button on Nord's site does nothing. Skip to the third-party billing section.
The refund math, by scenario
NordVPN does not prorate. The guarantee is binary: full refund inside 30 days of the initial purchase, zero refund after. No early-termination fee, no remaining-months credit. What that means in dollars:
| Scenario | What you paid | What you get back |
|---|---|---|
| Initial 2-yr Basic, day 5 | $74.16 | $74.16 (full refund, ask in live chat) |
| Initial 2-yr Basic, day 35 | $74.16 | $0 (past 30-day window, US) |
| 2-yr renewed at 1-yr rate, day 5 after renewal (US) | $139.08 | $0 standard. Chargeback possible. |
| Same renewal, day 5 (Germany / NL / UK) | $139.08 | $139.08 (EU consumer law) |
| Same renewal, month 8 (Germany / NL / UK) | $139.08 | ~$46.36 pro-rata (remaining 4 months) |
| App Store purchase, any date | varies | Nord cannot refund. Ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. |
Pricing based on NordVPN's published 2026 rates and the renewal pricing documented in Tom's Guide's 2026 VPN renewal price investigation. The 2-year intro plan renews at the 1-year rate, which Tom's Guide measured as a 287.63% per-month jump on the Basic tier and as much as 529% on aggressively discounted promo cohorts.
The four carve-outs Nord's checkout page does not advertise
When the 30-day guarantee does not apply
- 1. Renewals. Nord's policy is explicit: "Once your subscription renews, it's no longer eligible for a refund." In the US. EU users (Germany, Netherlands, UK) get the renewal window too.
- 2. Apple App Store purchases. Apple processes the payment; Apple keeps the refund power. Nord support will redirect you to reportaproblem.apple.com. Approval is at Apple's discretion.
- 3. Google Play, Amazon Appstore, and third-party resellers (StackSocial, Best Buy). Google has a 48-hour direct window; after that, Nord support may help but reports are inconsistent. Amazon and retailer purchases route back to the seller.
- 4. Cryptocurrency payments. Refunds return in crypto, to a wallet address you provide, at the equivalent value at processing time. 10-business-day timeline applies. Volatility risk is yours. Refundable, but the FX exposure is real.
Three routes to recover money
Start with Route 1. Most legitimate refund requests inside the window resolve there in under 24 hours. Routes 2 and 3 exist for the cases where Nord says no to something it should be saying yes to.
The standard request (live chat)
NordVPN's refund process is not self-serve. There is no button in the dashboard. You request via live chat on support.nordvpn.com. Email works but is slower and the chat agent has the authority to approve on the spot. Quote your order number, the original payment method, and use this exact wording (which has worked for several users on the ElevenForum auto-renewal thread):
Per Nord's official refund policy page, approval takes up to 4 hours, and funds land in up to 10 business days. Take a screenshot of the chat transcript before you close the tab.
The escalation (consumer law, by region)
Outside the standard window with a denied Route 1, the next move depends on where you live. NordVPN operates under Tefincom S.A. (Panama) with Nord Security as the Netherlands-based parent. A BBB complaint is a dead letter for US users (Nord is not US-registered), but EU consumer protection rules apply to EU subscribers.
Germany, Netherlands, UK: Nord's policy grants a full refund within 30 days of any renewal, plus pro-rata beyond that. Quote it back at them. Append to the chat template: "Per NordVPN's refund policy country-specific section, as a resident of [Germany / Netherlands / UK], I am entitled to a full refund within 30 days of the renewal charge." Approval is fast once cited.
California, Colorado, Illinois, New York: Your state's Automatic Renewal Law requires clear, conspicuous disclosure and a self-serve cancel option. The six pending class actions argue NordVPN's signup flow fails those tests. File with your state Attorney General. California's ARL (BPC 17600 et seq.) is the most-cited; the complaint form is at oag.ca.gov.
Elsewhere in the EU: The 14-day right of withdrawal under the EU Consumer Rights Directive applies to digital subscriptions unless you ticked a "start service immediately and waive withdrawal" box at signup. Most users do not remember if they did. Worth asking.
The chargeback (last resort)
If Routes 1 and 2 both fail and you have a legitimate dispute, a credit-card chargeback is the last option. US issuers accept disputes within 60 to 120 days of the charge under Regulation Z. The strongest grounds are the same ones the lawsuits are built on. From the April 2026 Virginia complaint via TechRadar:
"The auto-renewal pricing was intentionally and exceedingly difficult to cancel." The plaintiff is asking for over $100 million in damages.
Strong chargeback grounds:
- Undisclosed or inadequately disclosed auto-renewal (the core class-action allegation, documented at classaction.org).
- A renewal price meaningfully higher than the rate you signed up at, with no advance notice.
- Refused refund inside the 30-day window where you have a chat screenshot proving you asked in time.
- A charge after you cancelled auto-renewal.
Before filing: screenshot the charge, the original signup flow if reachable, your refund request transcript, and the denial. After filing: expect NordVPN to permanently close your account, which kills any Dedicated IP and breaks saved configs. Chargebacks are not casual. They are for when you are genuinely owed money and standard channels failed.
What NOT to do
Four mistakes that kill your refund
- Do not cancel first, then ask for the refund days later. Some agents have used the cancellation as evidence the user "no longer wanted service" to refuse the refund. Ask for the refund first, in the same session.
- Do not accept a "credit" or "extra months" in lieu of cash. Politely refuse. The 30-day guarantee is a cash refund to the original payment method.
- Do not delete your Nord Account before the refund processes. The 10-business-day window needs your account to exist.
- Do not assume the renewal is "the same plan" you bought. The 2-year intro renews as a 1-year subscription at standard rates. If you do nothing, you are not on the same plan.
The cancel flow, in detail
Five clicks on the web. The Nord mobile apps do not have a cancel button. The flow is the same for VPN, NordPass, NordLocker, and Dedicated IP, but each is a separate row you have to click separately.
Sign in at my.nordaccount.com
Use the email and password from your original purchase. If you forgot, the password reset link works. The Nord apps do not contain the cancel button. It is web-only.
Open Billing in the left-hand menu
From the dashboard, click Billing. This is where every product you pay Nord for is listed.
Click the Subscriptions tab
One row per active product. Bundle plans (Plus, Complete, Prime) show NordVPN plus NordPass and/or NordLocker as separate rows. You will need to repeat steps 4 and 5 on each row.
Click Manage next to Auto-Renewal ON
Each row has an Auto-Renewal ON pill with a Manage link. Click it.
Select Cancel Auto-Renewal and confirm
Nord will throw a retention screen (a "reason for leaving" survey and possibly a discount offer). The survey is optional. Confirm cancellation. A confirmation email lands within minutes. You keep service until the end of the paid period.
Bundle reminder: if you are on Plus, Complete, or Prime, you must repeat steps 4 and 5 for each component. Cancelling NordVPN does not cancel NordPass. Missing one means continued charges. This is one of the most-reported gotchas on the AVForums auto-renewal thread.
Verifying the refund actually arrives
Nord's timeline: approval within 4 hours of the chat request, funds returned within 10 business days. PayPal returns in 2 to 3. Cards in 5 to 10. Crypto in roughly the same window. If it does not land:
- Day 11: check your statement and the Nord chat transcript. Pending refunds sometimes post later.
- Day 14: re-open chat, give them the prior approval reference, get confirmation processing happened on their end.
- Day 21: if Nord confirms processing but funds are missing, file a chargeback as a missing-refund dispute with the transcript as evidence.
Why Nord is being sued six times
Between April 2024 and April 2026, NordVPN has been hit with at least six class-action lawsuits in US federal courts: Northern District of California (April 2024), Western District of North Carolina (July 2024), Colorado (November 2024), Illinois and New York (2025), and Eastern District of Virginia (April 10, 2026), which seeks over $100 million. Every one centers on the same complaint: that auto-renewal pricing and cancellation terms are not adequately disclosed at signup.
The relevance to you: if your refund is denied on a renewal you reasonably did not know was coming at the price it came at, that is the exact pattern the class actions allege is unlawful. State Automatic Renewal Laws (California BPC 17600+, New York GBL 527-a, Illinois 815 ILCS 505/2DDD) all require specific disclosures the lawsuits argue NordVPN's checkout flow does not satisfy.
Two notes. The FTC's 2024 Negative Option Rule was vacated by the 8th Circuit in July 2025, so do not cite it as active federal protection. And Nord's Panama corporate structure makes a US BBB complaint toothless, which is why the lawsuits are the more meaningful enforcement vector.
Questions people actually ask
Can I get a refund on a NordVPN renewal charge?
Under standard US policy, no. The 30-day money-back guarantee covers your initial purchase only. There are two exceptions: residents of Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK get a full refund within 30 days of any renewal under EU consumer law (or pro-rata after), and if you can credibly argue the renewal was inadequately disclosed, a chargeback may succeed. The six pending class actions are built on exactly that disclosure argument.
I paid through the Apple App Store. Why won't NordVPN refund me?
Apple processed the payment, Apple controls App Store refunds. Nord support will redirect you to reportaproblem.apple.com. Same for Google Play (48 hours direct, then Nord support), Amazon Appstore (Amazon only), and any third-party retailer.
Can I do a chargeback if NordVPN refuses my refund?
Yes, with legitimate grounds: undisclosed auto-renewal, renewal price not matching original quote, refused refund within 30 days where you have proof of a timely request. US issuers accept disputes within 60 to 120 days of the charge. Expect Nord to permanently close your account. Save screenshots first.
My 2-year plan just renewed at a much higher price. Is that legal?
Legal but contested, and the central allegation in six active class actions. 2-year plans renew at 1-year rates. Tom's Guide documented per-month jumps of 287.63% on Basic and 529% on aggressively-priced cohorts. Whether the disclosure satisfies your state's Automatic Renewal Law is the live legal question.
What does cancellation actually stop?
Cancelling auto-renewal stops future charges. It does not refund anything you have already paid, end your current paid period, or delete your Nord Account. On bundle plans, it only cancels the row you clicked. NordPass and NordLocker need to be cancelled separately.
If you're auditing the whole VPN and SaaS stack
This same renewal playbook is running on your other annual subscriptions.
Nord is not the only brand whose multi-year intro renews at a higher rate. Subcut spots renewal charges before they hit, so you decide ahead of time whether to cancel, not in the chat queue 30 days too late.
