Cancel OnStar by Phone

1

Call OnStar at 1-888-4-ONSTAR

Call 1-888-466-7827 during business hours. You can also press the blue OnStar button in your vehicle to connect directly. Have your account information ready, including your name, vehicle VIN, and account PIN.

2

Verify your identity

The representative will ask you to verify your account. Provide your name, account PIN, and vehicle information. If you do not remember your PIN, they can verify with other personal details like your address or last four digits of SSN.

3

Request cancellation firmly

Tell the representative clearly: "I would like to cancel my OnStar subscription." They will likely offer discounted rates or free trial periods to retain you. Politely decline and repeat your cancellation request if needed.

4

Get a confirmation number

Ask for a cancellation confirmation number and request a confirmation email. Note the date and time of your call. This protects you in case of any billing disputes or if the cancellation does not process correctly.

What Happens After You Cancel OnStar?

Connected services stop at end of billing period

Remote start, vehicle diagnostics, turn-by-turn navigation, and Wi-Fi hotspot all stop working when your subscription ends. Your vehicle itself continues to function normally.

Emergency services are discontinued

Automatic Crash Response, emergency SOS button, and stolen vehicle assistance all stop after cancellation. Your vehicle's built-in safety systems like airbags continue to work independently.

The myChevrolet/myGMC app loses remote features

Remote lock/unlock, remote start, and vehicle location features in the myChevrolet, myBuick, myGMC, or myCadillac apps will no longer work without an active OnStar plan.

You can resubscribe at any time

OnStar can be reactivated by calling the same number or pressing the blue button in your vehicle. Your vehicle's hardware remains capable of supporting OnStar services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel OnStar online or through the app?

No. OnStar requires you to call to cancel. There is no online cancellation option through the website or the myChevrolet/myGMC app. You must call 1-888-466-7827 or press the blue OnStar button in your vehicle.

Will OnStar try to keep me as a customer?

Yes. OnStar representatives are trained to offer discounts, free months, or plan downgrades to retain customers. Be polite but firm if you want to cancel. You may need to decline multiple offers before they process the cancellation.

What is the OnStar free basic plan?

Some GM vehicles come with a free basic OnStar plan that includes limited services like dealer maintenance notifications. Ask the representative about downgrading to the free plan instead of fully canceling if you want to keep some connectivity.

Does canceling OnStar affect my car warranty?

No. Canceling OnStar has no effect on your vehicle's factory warranty or any extended warranty you may have purchased. These are separate services from OnStar connected vehicle features.

Can I cancel just the Wi-Fi hotspot but keep other OnStar services?

Yes. OnStar offers different plan tiers. You can downgrade your plan to remove Wi-Fi while keeping emergency services and remote access. Ask the representative about available plan options when you call.
