How to cancel The Athletic in 2026 (standalone vs. NYT bundle: they cancel differently)
The Athletic has three completely different cancel paths and most readers do not know which one is theirs. Standalone web subscribers click through a documented dark-pattern funnel with a $24/year counter-offer. NYT All Access subscribers cannot remove The Athletic alone (cancel everything or phone NYT). App Store and Play Store subscribers use neither of those paths.
Step zero: which subscription do you actually have?
Open your most recent receipt or your card statement. The merchant descriptor tells you everything:
- "THEATHLETIC" or "THE ATHLETIC MEDIA": standalone direct subscriber. Use Path 1.
- "NYTIMES" or "NEW YORK TIMES": NYT All Access bundle. The Athletic is embedded. Use Path 2.
- "APPLE.COM/BILL": iOS App Store subscription. Use Path 3 (iOS).
- "GOOGLE *THE ATHLETIC": Google Play subscription. Use Path 3 (Android).
Two descriptors? You are paying twice (legacy standalone plus a newer All Access bundle). Cancel both. More common than you would think; NYT bought The Athletic in February 2022 and the billing systems merged gradually.
The three cancel paths at a glance
| Path | Price (US, 2026) | Where to cancel | Friction | Refund? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone web Monthly or annual, direct from The Athletic |
~$8.99/mo ~$71.99/yr |
theathletic.com/account/subscriptions | Roach Motel + Misdirection (documented). $24/yr counter-offer possible. | No prorate. Access through period end. |
| NYT All Access bundle The Athletic is included, not separable |
~$25/mo (US) | Cancel everything at nytimes.com OR call 1-800-698-4637 to ask about a downgrade | No surgical removal. Three-tier discount ladder on bundle cancel. | No. Annual loses unused months. |
| App Store / Play Store Signed up inside the app |
Varies (typically matches standalone) | iOS: Settings, name, Subscriptions. Android: Play Store, profile, Payments and subscriptions. | Low. Two taps. The Athletic cannot cancel for you. | Apple or Google refund process, not The Athletic. |
On the NYT bundle path, you are not really cancelling The Athletic. You are cancelling NYT and losing The Athletic with it.
Cancel a direct, web-billed The Athletic subscription
Self-serve, preserved post-NYT acquisition, and the path with the most documented friction. The Hall of Shame design blog catalogued this flow as a textbook Roach Motel plus Misdirection, with full screenshots at hallofshame.design. Knowing the next screen before it appears removes about 80% of the pressure.

1
Sign in at theathletic.com/account/subscriptions
Some accounts redirect to
nytimes.com/athletic/settings. Either is fine. Use the email that gets your billing receipts. -
2
Click Cancel Subscription
The only button in this flow that does what it says. After this point, button labels stop being trustworthy.
-
3
Refuse "Get Offer." Click "Continue to Cancel."
High-contrast Get Offer against a low-contrast Continue to Cancel link. The Misdirection pattern in action. Click the smaller one.
-
4
Pick any reason on the cancellation survey
Mandatory gate. Picking "too expensive" is the most reliable trigger for the $24/year counter-offer below.
-
5
Confirm. Do not click "I Changed My Mind."
The final screen places I Changed My Mind right next to the actual cancel option, identical visual weight. Read it slowly.
The $24/year counter-offer
Annual subscribers who initiate cancel are commonly shown a discount that drops the renewal from roughly $71.99 to roughly $24 a year. A 67% cut, available nowhere on the public pricing page. Sports forum posters confirm it as triggered by starting the cancel flow (247Sports Kansas board).
Want to keep The Athletic at a fair price? Take it. Want out? Click cancel. The math: $24/yr is $2/mo, the documented floor. If you accept, set a calendar reminder for renewal day; the rate snaps back to standard pricing on the second renewal, and promo rates do not re-apply if you cancel and resubscribe later.
You cannot remove The Athletic alone from the bundle
NYT acquired The Athletic in February 2022 and folded it into All Access. There is no checkbox to opt out, no "All Access without sports" tier. Two options: (A) cancel the entire All Access bundle (ends News, Games, Cooking, Wirecutter, Audio, and The Athletic at once), or (B) phone NYT at 1-800-698-4637 (Mon to Sun, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET) and ask whether your account can move to a smaller plan that excludes The Athletic. Walk through the full retention ladder in our NYT cancellation guide. Get any plan change in writing before agreeing.
The Athletic and NYT cannot cancel a platform-billed sub
Tapped subscribe inside the iOS or Android app? Apple or Google owns the billing relationship. The Athletic web cancel will not touch it. Posters on the Apple Community forum regularly report cancelling on the website, assuming it worked, then getting charged anyway. The platform cancel is the only cancel.
iPhone
- Open Settings, tap your name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Tap The Athletic, then Cancel Subscription
Android
- Open Play Store, tap your profile icon
- Tap Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions
- Tap The Athletic, then Cancel Subscription
Refund requests go through reportaproblem.apple.com or Google Play's order history, not The Athletic. Deleting the app does not cancel anything.
Switching, not cancelling: the four routes most people miss
A meaningful share of cancellations are actually downgrades in disguise. If your real problem is the price, not the product, one of these four moves is usually a better answer than cancelling outright.
- Standalone annual to $24/year (the cancel-flow counter-offer). Initiate cancel, pick the price reason, accept. $48 saved per year, locked for one renewal cycle.
- NYT All Access to News-only (phone, agent-side). Drops you out of The Athletic, Games, Cooking, and Wirecutter. Keeps NYT News at a lower price. Ask the agent for what is available on your account.
- Monthly to annual. Counter-intuitive: if you keep forgetting to cancel monthly, annual locks in a lower per-month rate and forces one cancel decision per year instead of twelve. See The Annual Plan Trap for when annual is and is not the right move.
- Lapse, then wait for the win-back. Lapsed subscribers report offers as deep as $0.75/month for 12 months 30 to 90 days later (hockey forum thread). Not a guarantee.
Five gotchas that bite people across all three paths
- The promo rate is one-time. Signed up at $1/mo for 6 months or $9.99/year? Cancel and resubscribe later, you pay standard rates. One CougarBoard poster (November 2024) signed up at $1/mo, forgot to cancel, was auto-renewed at $72/yr, support refused the refund. "Super predatory" was the verdict in the forum thread. Cancel before the promo ends, not after.
- Annual mid-year cancel keeps your money. No prorate. Cancel a $71.99 plan in month 3 and you still paid for 12 months. Use the remaining 9.
- Two paths at once is real. Some readers have both a legacy standalone Athletic sub (pre-acquisition) and a newer All Access bundle that includes The Athletic. You are paying twice. Check both systems.
- "I Changed My Mind" is in the cancel button's parking spot. On the final standalone screen, identical visual weight. Half the support tickets on this are people who fast-fingered the wrong one and got billed full price next month.
- The Athletic and NYT have shared legal trouble. Pre-2023 California and North Carolina class actions over auto-renewal disclosures (Top Class Actions). A September 2024 VPPA suit alleged video-viewing data was shared with Meta and TikTok without consent (Bloomberg Law). Context for why the cancel UX is what it is.
Questions people actually ask
Can I remove just The Athletic from NYT All Access?
No self-serve option. Cancel the entire bundle, or call NYT at 1-800-698-4637 to ask about a non-Athletic plan.
What is the $24/year cancel-flow offer?
A retention discount dropping renewal from ~$71.99 to ~$24/yr, triggered by initiating cancel and picking a price-related reason. Take it if you want to stay cheaper; if you want out, don't fast-finger "I Changed My Mind."
Will I get a refund for unused months on my annual plan?
No. The Athletic does not prorate. Cancelling in month 3 keeps access through month 12, no refund.
I got auto-renewed at $72 after a $1 promo. Can I get it back?
Probably not through Athletic support. Try a card chargeback. Document the promo offer, renewal notice date, and the charge.
I subscribed in the iOS app. Can The Athletic cancel for me?
No. Apple owns App Store billing. iPhone: Settings › your name › Subscriptions › The Athletic › Cancel. Android: Play Store › profile › Payments and subscriptions.
Will I lose access immediately when I cancel?
No. Access continues through the period you paid for. You're cancelling the renewal, not the current period.
If you are also auditing the rest of the news and sports stack
This same bundle-trap math is running on the other apps you subscribe to.
The Athletic is the small print inside NYT All Access. Disney+ is the small print inside Hulu. Apple TV+ is bundled inside Apple One. Subcut spots the renewals before they hit so you decide ahead of time, not in the cancel flow at 9:54 p.m. with a Misdirection button waiting for your tired thumb.
