How to Cancel X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue)

Self-serve, about 4 minutes. The one thing that trips people up: cancel on the same platform where you subscribed. Get that wrong and the cancellation silently fails.

Before anything: which platform is billing you?

Open your most recent X Premium receipt and match the biller:

  • Apple / iTunes → cancel in iPhone Settings (iOS path).
  • Google Play → cancel in the Play Store app (Android path).
  • X, Twitter, or Stripe → cancel on x.com (Web path).

Legacy subscribers who signed up before August 5, 2023 may still see the line item labeled Twitter or Twitter Blue. Same subscription, old name.

When the charge stops, and when the checkmark goes

Cancellation halts the next renewal. You keep Premium (blue checkmark included) until the current billing period ends, then drop to a normal X account. No refund for the unused portion: X's Purchaser Terms say flatly that "X does not process refunds for amounts they charge you for monthly subscriptions."

A correction worth flagging. Older guides claim the blue checkmark disappears the instant you cancel. That is wrong for standard Premium. Per multiple 2025 and 2026 cancel guides, the badge persists through the end of the billing period you paid for.

Two tiers behave differently. Premium Business (gold checkmark) and Premium Organizations (grey checkmark) lose the badge immediately on cancel, no grace period.

Two things X does not surface in the cancel flow

Creator payouts stop instantly. iOS resubs cost 36% more than web.

Creator Revenue Sharing eligibility ends the moment you cancel, not at the end of the billing period. Active Premium is a hard requirement, per the documented rules. If a payout cycle is in progress, time the cancel so the cycle closes first.

The iOS price trap. X Premium runs about $11/month on iOS versus $8/month on web. That is roughly a $36/year Apple tax. If you are canceling iOS to resubscribe, do it on the web. Same checkmark, $36 cheaper.

If your account was suspended

Suspension does not stop billing. Users in the X developer community have reported being charged for months while locked out, with no automatic refund. Cancel manually on the original platform (still possible while suspended) or dispute via Apple or Google. The X refund form exists but does not guarantee a payout.

Not quite ready to cancel?

X Basic runs about $3/month, around a third of standard Premium on web. It drops the blue checkmark but keeps editable tweets, longer posts, and reduced ads. If you signed up to skip friction (not for the badge), downgrade instead of canceling: use the same Premium settings page and pick a different tier.

Questions people actually ask

I subscribed when it was called Twitter Blue. Why can't I find X in my iOS subscriptions?

Apple keeps the original product name on legacy subs. If you joined before August 5, 2023, your iPhone Subscriptions screen may still list it as Twitter or Twitter Blue. Same subscription. The Apple Community thread on this has a long list of users hitting the same mismatch.

Does my blue checkmark disappear the moment I cancel?

No. Standard Premium keeps the blue checkmark until the current billing period ends. Only Premium Business (gold) and Premium Organizations (grey) lose their badge immediately.

Will X refund the rest of the month or year I already paid for?

No. The Purchaser Terms exclude prorated refunds on monthly and annual plans. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date or you get charged again. Special cases go through the refund request form, no guarantee.

If I'm in the Creator Revenue Sharing program, what happens when I cancel?

Eligibility ends instantly, not at billing-period end. You stop accruing ad-share revenue the moment you cancel, even with the checkmark still visible. Close any in-flight payout cycle first.

Now that X is off the list, what else is on autopilot?

Most people find two to four forgotten subscriptions the first time they actually look. Subcut shows every recurring charge in 60 seconds. No bank login required.
