Cancel Duolingo Plus on the Web
Check where you subscribed
Before anything else, determine where you originally subscribed. If you signed up through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, you must cancel through those platforms (see the section below). If you signed up on duolingo.com, follow these web steps.
Log in and go to Settings
Go to duolingo.com in your browser and sign in. Click your profile icon or username in the top-right corner, then select Settings from the dropdown menu.
Navigate to Super Duolingo
On the Settings page, look for the Super Duolingo section (or Duolingo Plus if you see the older branding). Click Manage Subscription or Manage Plan.
Cancel Subscription
Click Cancel Subscription and confirm the cancellation. Your Super Duolingo features remain active until the end of your current billing period. You will receive a confirmation email.
Critical: Deleting the Duolingo app does NOT cancel your subscription. You will continue to be charged unless you explicitly cancel through the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or the Duolingo website. Always cancel first, then uninstall if you wish.
Subscribed Through Apple or Google?
Most Duolingo Plus subscribers signed up through the App Store or Play Store. If that is the case, the Duolingo website will not show a cancel option. You must cancel through the platform you used to subscribe.

- 1. Open Settings on your iPhone
- 2. Tap your name at the top (Apple Account)
- 3. Tap Subscriptions
- 4. Tap Duolingo in the list
- 5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm

- 1. Open the Google Play Store app
- 2. Tap your profile icon (top right)
- 3. Tap Payments & subscriptions
- 4. Tap Subscriptions then Duolingo

What Happens After You Cancel Duolingo Plus?
Your progress and XP are fully preserved
All your XP, levels, course progress, achievements, and learned words are preserved after cancellation. Duolingo never removes your learning history regardless of your subscription status.
Streak Freeze and unlimited hearts disappear
On the free tier, you no longer have automatic Streak Freeze protection, so missing a day breaks your streak. You also return to the hearts (lives) system, meaning mistakes cost hearts and you may need to wait or practice to earn more.
Ads return and offline access is removed
The free tier includes advertisements between lessons. You also lose the ability to download lessons for offline use. Any previously downloaded lessons will become inaccessible.
Family plan members are also affected
If you cancel a Family Plan, all members on the plan lose Super Duolingo access when the billing period ends. Each member's individual progress is preserved, and they all revert to the free tier independently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose my streak if I cancel Duolingo Plus?
Your current streak is preserved, but you lose the Streak Freeze safety net. With Super Duolingo, Streak Freeze automatically protects your streak when you miss a day. On the free tier, you need to manually equip streak freezes using gems, and missing a day without one breaks your streak.
Does deleting the Duolingo app cancel my subscription?
No, absolutely not. Deleting the app only removes it from your device. Your subscription continues, and you will keep being charged. You must cancel through the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or Duolingo website first, then delete the app if you wish.
Will I get a refund if I cancel Duolingo Plus?
Duolingo does not offer refunds for the current billing period. Your premium features remain active until the period ends. If you want to request a refund for an App Store or Play Store purchase, you need to contact Apple or Google directly through their refund request processes.
Can I still learn languages for free after canceling?
Yes. The core Duolingo language learning content is completely free. You can access all lessons and courses on the free tier. The main differences are limited hearts (mistakes), ads between lessons, no offline downloads, and no progress quizzes.
What is the difference between Duolingo Plus and Super Duolingo?
They are the same product. Duolingo rebranded Duolingo Plus to Super Duolingo. The features are identical: unlimited hearts, no ads, offline access, streak freeze, progress quizzes, and unlimited mistakes. The cancellation process is the same regardless of which name you see.
