Cancel Medium on the Website
Sign in to Medium
Go to medium.com in your web browser and sign in with the account that has the membership. You can sign in with Google, Facebook, Apple, email, or other linked methods.
Go to Settings
Click your profile picture in the top-right corner of the page. From the dropdown menu, select Settings. This opens your account settings page.
Find the Membership section
Scroll down the Settings page until you find the Membership section. This area shows your current plan, billing information, and membership management options.
Click Cancel your membership
Click Cancel your membership. Medium will ask you to confirm and may show the benefits you will lose. Confirm the cancellation, and your membership will remain active until the end of your current billing cycle.
Subscribed Through Apple or Google?

What Happens After You Cancel Medium?
Membership benefits last until your billing period ends
After canceling, you retain full member access, including unlimited access to member-only stories, until the end of your current billing cycle. Nothing changes immediately.
Member-only articles become paywalled again
Once your billing period ends, member-only articles will be paywalled again. You will only be able to read a limited number of free articles per month, just as you did before subscribing.
Your published articles stay on Medium
If you are a writer on Medium, canceling your membership does not remove your published articles. Your stories, followers, and writing profile remain intact. You can still write and publish new articles.
Uninstalling the app does not cancel billing
This is an important distinction: simply uninstalling the Medium app from your phone does not cancel your membership. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, you must cancel through those platform settings to stop future charges.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Medium membership cost?
Medium membership costs $5 per month or $50 per year. The membership gives you unlimited access to all member-only stories, audio versions of articles, and the ability to support your favorite writers through the Medium Partner Program.
Will I get a refund if I cancel Medium?
Medium does not typically offer refunds for partial billing periods. After canceling, your membership benefits continue until the end of the cycle you already paid for. You will not be charged for the next billing period.
Does canceling affect my ability to write on Medium?
No. You can still write, publish, and earn through the Medium Partner Program without a paid membership. The membership only controls your access to read member-only content from other writers.
How do I know if I subscribed through the website or an app store?
Check your bank or credit card statement. If the charge shows as "Medium" directly, you subscribed through the website and should cancel there. If it shows as "Apple" or "Google," cancel through your device's subscription settings.
Can I resubscribe to Medium later?
Yes. You can resubscribe at any time by going to medium.com/plans or through the app. Your account, reading history, and publications will still be there when you return.
