How to Actually Cancel Planet Fitness in 2026
Planet Fitness markets itself as a "no hassle to cancel" gym. The reality, for about 47 states, is that you have to physically walk into the exact club where you signed up during weekday business hours, ask for a form, and refuse to leave without written confirmation. Or mail a certified letter and wait. Here is the version that actually works.
Before you read anything else
If your cancellation is not received by your home club at least 7 days before your next billing date, you get charged again. If it is not received by the 25th of the month before your annual fee is scheduled, you get charged the $49 annual fee, which is non-refundable once it hits. Both deadlines apply independently. Both can fire in the same month.
Why Planet Fitness is so hard to leave
Most subscription companies fight you with a phone call. Planet Fitness fights you with geography. The default cancel channel is in person at your "home club," which is whichever franchise location you signed up at. Not the one you actually go to. Black Card multi-club access does not extend to cancellation. You signed up in Tampa, you moved to Denver, you cancel in Tampa. Or you write a letter.
Planet Fitness has more than 6,800 documented complaints on PissedConsumer dominated by two themes: "I cancelled and they kept charging me" and "I had no idea about the annual fee." In October 2025, New Jersey plaintiffs filed a class action alleging Planet Fitness terms violated the state's Truth in Consumer Contract, Warranty and Notice Act and Health Club Services Act, documented at Top Class Actions.
Planet Fitness is also roughly 90% franchised. Whether your specific club asks for ID, accepts a typed letter, processes cancellations on weekends, or honors a medical hardship waiver is up to the franchisee. "Contact your home club to verify" is the rule.
Which cancel path applies to you
Pick once. Different states unlock different options. The wrong path wastes weeks.
If your home club is in California, New York, or New Jersey
State law gives you online cancellation. California Business and Professions Code 17602 and Civil Code 1812.80, New York General Business Law 624-a, and New Jersey Statute 56:8-39 all require gyms to honor an online cancel request from members who joined online. Log in at planetfitness.com, go to Account Settings, then Manage Membership, then Cancel Membership. Save the email confirmation. Skip the rest of this guide unless the button does not appear, in which case fall to certified mail.
If you can physically visit your home club
In-person is the fastest path. Bring photo ID, your membership ID if you know it, and a way to capture written confirmation (phone camera or email). Walk in during staffed hours (typically Mon to Fri, 9 AM to 5 PM, varies by franchisee), request the cancellation form, fill it, and refuse to leave without a written or emailed receipt.
If you cannot get to your home club (moved, mobility, time)
Certified mail is your reliable path. It works in all 50 states. The USPS return receipt is a federally backed delivery confirmation, which is the document you want when you have to argue with Planet Fitness three months from now about a charge that should not exist. Budget about $5 and 5 to 7 business days for delivery.
If you have heard about the "California loophole"
Read the warning below before you try it. It is unofficial, fragile, and may break without notice. Have certified mail ready as a backup if it fails.
Method A: In person at your home club
Go to your home club, not just any Planet Fitness
Black Card multi-club access does not include cancellation. Confirm your home club at planetfitness.com/gyms by signing in. Aim for a weekday morning between 9 AM and noon when staff are reliably present and not slammed.
Ask for the cancellation form by name
Front desk staff are often new and trained to redirect. Say: "I'd like to cancel my membership today. Please give me the cancellation form." If they tell you "the manager handles that," ask when the manager will be in and request the form anyway.
Fill in the form completely
Name, membership ID, date of birth, last four of your card, reason for cancellation. The reason field is optional in most franchises but answering "moving / financial / not using" keeps things moving.
Get the receipt before you leave
This is the step everyone skips and then regrets. Take a phone photo of the completed form. Ask for an emailed copy or a printed stub. Ask the staffer to write the effective cancellation date on it and initial. If they refuse, ask for the manager. Do not leave without paper.
Watch your bank statement for the next two cycles
Cancellation processes can take 7 to 10 business days to propagate. Watch for a final monthly charge if you missed the 10th of the month deadline, and watch for the annual fee if your cancel landed too close to its trigger date. Both are normal. A third charge is not.
Method B: Certified mail (the path that always works)
Certified mail with Return Receipt Requested is the documented way to prove a Planet Fitness club received your cancellation. Attorney responses on Avvo's threads on suing Planet Fitness for post-cancellation charges name the green USPS Return Receipt as the single most valuable piece of evidence. Spend the $5.
Template you can copy
[Your full name] [Your street address] [City, State, ZIP] [Phone] [Email] [Date] Planet Fitness, [Club Name] [Club street address] [City, State, ZIP] Re: Membership Cancellation Request To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to formally cancel my Planet Fitness membership, effective immediately. Account details: - Full name: [as on account] - Date of birth: [DOB] - Membership ID: [if known] - Last four digits of card on file: [XXXX] - Email on file: [email] - Home club: [club name and address] Please confirm receipt of this letter and the effective cancellation date in writing at the email address above within 10 business days. Sincerely, [Signature] [Printed name]
Take that to any USPS counter. Request Certified Mail (form 3800) and Return Receipt Requested (form 3811, the green card). Keep both the tracking slip and, when it comes back, the signed delivery card. Photograph them. Store in cloud storage you will still have access to in five years. This is the document that lets you win a chargeback or, if it comes to it, a small claims case.
Allow 7 business days after confirmed delivery for processing. If you have not received a written confirmation by day 10, call the club, reference the tracking number, and request the email confirmation in writing. Do not let them tell you "it's done" verbally without paper.
What the front desk will try, and what to say back
Planet Fitness staff are not running a phone-style retention call. They are running a friction script designed to send you home without cancelling. The pattern, drawn from BBB complaint records and consumer review aggregators, looks like this.
Move 1: The redirect. "You'll need to talk to the manager and they're not in today. Come back Monday."
You: "I understand. Please give me the cancellation form so I can fill it out today. I'll leave a signed copy and a return envelope for the manager. Can you note in the system that I was here to cancel today?"
Move 2: The freeze pitch. "Have you considered freezing your account instead? It's only $5 a month and you keep your spot."
You: "No thanks. I want to cancel today, not freeze."
Move 3: The balance excuse. "There's a past-due balance / annual fee on your account. I can't cancel until that's paid."
You: "I am cancelling today. We can dispute the balance separately. Please process the cancellation and provide written confirmation, and I will handle the disputed charge with the manager and my bank." Note: this works because conditioning cancellation on payment of a disputed amount is itself an issue under several state consumer protection laws.
Move 4: The verbal-only finish. "Okay, you're all set."
You: "Great. Can you email me the confirmation right now while I'm standing here? I'd like the effective cancellation date and the next-billing-date status in writing."
Move 5: The lost paperwork (later). A month later, you get charged. Club says they have no record.
You: Send the photo of the form / the certified mail receipt / the confirmation email. Open a chargeback the same day. Do not wait to "give them a chance to fix it." That window is what they need to bill you again.
The script that ends every move: "I'd like to cancel my Planet Fitness membership today and receive written confirmation. Please do that now." Repeat as needed.
Use at your own risk
The "California loophole" people are posting on TikTok
The viral trick: change your home club to a California location, change your address to a California address, log out, log back in, and a "Cancel Membership" button appears. The Sun covered it in 2024 and users have reported it working.
It is unofficial. Planet Fitness is under zero obligation to keep it working, and users report the address-change function "conveniently sucks" after they try it. Treat it as a possible shortcut, not a plan. Have your certified mail letter typed and ready before you try, so you can mail it the next morning if the button never appears. Even if the button appears, the online flow will likely show a freeze offer or discount before letting you finish. Click through and save the confirmation email. Without that email you have nothing.
The $49 annual fee trap, explained
Planet Fitness has an annual fee that is not prominent on the join page and has no calendar-year alignment. Both Classic (~$15/month) and Black Card (~$25/month, rising to $29.99 in 2026) carry it. It used to be $39. As of 2025 to 2026, the standard is now $49.
The trap is the timing. The annual fee charges roughly 8 weeks after you sign up, not in January, and Planet Fitness does not send a reminder. Joined in early March? The fee hits in early May. Documented at PF Guides.
To avoid the annual fee, your cancellation has to be received by the 25th of the month BEFORE the fee is scheduled to charge. Not 7 days before. Not by the first of the month. The 25th. Miss it by a day and Planet Fitness keeps $49 that they will not refund. The annual fee is non-refundable once it bills.
Separate problem: monthly dues. To skip your next monthly charge (billed on the 17th), your cancellation has to be received by the 10th of the current month. Cancel on the 11th and you owe one more month. Both deadlines can hit in the same week, so check your join date and work backwards before you mail anything.
How to verify the cancellation actually stuck
Members on PissedConsumer document being charged months after a confirmation email. Verify steps:
1. Save the paper.
Confirmation email, photo of the in-club form, certified mail receipt, return receipt card. All four if you have them. Cloud storage, not just your phone.
2. Watch your bank, not the app.
The Planet Fitness app showing "join now" does not mean you are cancelled. Banking statement showing no PF charge for 2 full cycles is the only real signal.
3. Note your annual fee window.
Even if monthly dues stop, the annual fee can still trigger if your cancel landed close to its date. Watch month 2 specifically.
4. If you get charged: chargeback fast.
Call your bank within 60 days of the disputed charge. Cite your cancellation date. Provide the certified mail receipt. Banks side with the consumer here routinely.
Can you get money back?
Mostly no. Planet Fitness does not prorate monthly dues, and the annual fee is non-refundable once charged. Many states allow a 3-business-day cooling-off period after contract signing under health club law. Past that, money paid is gone.
Refund-possible scenarios, with documentation: billing error after confirmed cancellation, duplicate charges, medical hardship, relocation 25+ miles from any club, military deployment, or gym closure. The $58 commitment-buyout fee can be waived for hardship.
About that $58. If your contract was sold as a 12-month commitment (not "no commitment month-to-month"), early cancellation triggers a $58 buyout fee on both Classic and Black Card. The no-commitment version is sometimes only available during promo windows. Check your original contract.
What the law actually says
The FTC's "click-to-cancel" Negative Option Rule was finalized in October 2024 and would have required cancellation as easy as signup. The rule was vacated by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in July 2025 on procedural grounds. It is not active law.
What is active: ROSCA, the federal Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, which was the basis for the FTC's August 2025 enforcement action against LA Fitness for "impossible to cancel" practices, documented at Inside Privacy. State laws also have teeth: CA BPC 17602, NY GBL 624-a, NJ NJSA 56:8-39, and Massachusetts Health Club Act (the basis for Hayes v. Planet Fitness AssetCo., LLC in 2024, where a court found Planet Fitness contract terms violated the act).
Planet Fitness is on regulators' radar.
Questions Planet Fitness members actually ask
Can I cancel Planet Fitness online?
Only if your home club is in California, New York, or New Jersey, where state law (CA BPC 17602, NY GBL 624-a, NJ NJSA 56:8-39) forces gyms to allow online cancellation. In every other state the official paths are in person or by certified mail. Planet Fitness has been reported to be expanding online cancel beyond these three states, but coverage is inconsistent. If the option does not appear in your account settings, it is not available to you.
Can I cancel Planet Fitness by phone?
No. The corporate number cannot process cancellations and your home club is not obligated to do it by phone either. Multiple consumer complaints describe members being told over the phone that they were cancelled, then being charged for months after. If you cannot make it in person, use certified mail. That is your paper trail.
What is the Planet Fitness annual fee and when does it hit?
The annual fee is currently $49 (it was $39 for years, and some older guides still cite the lower number). It charges roughly 8 weeks after you sign up, not in January, and Planet Fitness does not send a reminder. To avoid it, your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the fee is scheduled to hit.
Planet Fitness charged me after I cancelled. What now?
Pull out your certified mail receipt or in-person confirmation. Email the club manager with the proof and request a refund. If no resolution in 7 days, file a chargeback with your bank citing the cancellation date. If charges continue, file complaints with the BBB and your state attorney general. Avvo attorney responses confirm small claims is viable for documented post-cancellation charging.
Does the California loophole still work for cancelling Planet Fitness from another state?
The trick of changing your home club to a California location to unlock the online cancel button is real and has worked for some out-of-state members. It is not officially supported. The address-change function is reported to be unreliable, and Planet Fitness could close it at any time. Treat it as a possible shortcut, not a reliable path. Have certified mail ready as backup.
If you're rebuilding your fitness stack
The same playbook is running on your other subscriptions.
Planet Fitness uses geography and timing to wear you down. Other services use 14-day windows, surprise renewals, and a phone tree. Subcut spots every recurring charge on your card in about 60 seconds, flags renewals before they hit, and lets you decide ahead of time rather than in the cancel flow.
