How to Cancel Skillshare and (Maybe) Get Your Money Back
On April 3, 2025, Skillshare quietly cut its refund window from roughly 30 days to 7. Annual renewal charges are now non-refundable in writing. Here is the cancel flow, the refund math, and the three routes that still work.
The financial reality
Skillshare's Premium Annual plan is $167.88/year and it auto-renews. There is no monthly plan on the website (only inside the iOS and Android apps), no pause button, and no free tier to fall back on once you cancel. Per the current refund policy: you get 7 days to refund the first charge after your trial, and zero days to refund any renewal charge. If you noticed the $167.88 hit your card 9 days after the trial ended, Skillshare's official answer is no.
That does not mean $167.88 is gone. It means standard support is not where you fight. The three routes that still work are below.
The refund math, post-April 2025
Until April 3, 2025, a now-archived help-center page described a 30-day initial-purchase refund window. Skillshare replaced that with a 7-day window and made every renewal charge non-refundable, full stop. Any guide older than April 2025 telling you Skillshare prorates refunds is dead advice.
What Skillshare will refund directly
- YESFirst charge after your free trial, if you ask within 7 days of that charge. Email [email protected] with your account email and the charge date.
- NOAny renewal charge (year 2, year 3, etc.). Even if you cancel the same morning the charge posts. The renewal email goes out 30 days ahead per Skillshare's terms, but the charge fires automatically around midnight UTC.
- NOAny charge older than 7 days, regardless of whether you ever used the service.
- NOAny App Store or Google Play purchase. Skillshare will redirect you to Apple or Google. That is not a brush-off; they literally don't have the money.
Real-world scenarios
| Situation | Direct refund odds |
|---|---|
| Free trial ended 3 days ago, $167.88 hit your card | Likely refundable (Route 1) |
| First charge, 14 days ago, never logged in | Outside policy, fight with Route 2 |
| Annual renewal, charged this morning, cancelled by lunch | Policy says zero (Route 2 or 3) |
| Charged in 2025 and 2026 after you cancelled in 2024 | Chargeback territory (Route 3) |
| Subscribed on iPhone, want refund from Skillshare | Wrong company, use Apple |
Three routes to recover money
Route 1
The standard ticket (only if you are inside the 7-day window)
This is the only path where Skillshare's own policy says yes. Email [email protected] from the address on your account. There is no phone line and no live chat for refunds. Keep the wording tight, factual, and inside the 7-day window. Skillshare's support reps work from templates; a clean request gets a clean refund.
Hi Skillshare team,
My free trial converted on [DATE] and I was charged $167.88 on the card ending [LAST 4]. Per the current refund policy effective April 3, 2025, the first charge after a free trial is refundable if requested within 7 days. I am within that window and would like to request a full refund.
Account email: [YOUR EMAIL]
Transaction date: [DATE]
Thanks,
[NAME]
Skillshare typically responds within 2 to 4 business days. If they decline despite you being inside the window, copy their reply and move to Route 2.
Route 2
The escalation (statutes, regulators, mass arbitration)
When the standard ticket says no (or your charge is outside the 7-day window), the leverage shifts to laws Skillshare's TOS cannot override. Three are worth citing:
- California Automatic Renewal Law (ARL). Requires clear and conspicuous disclosure of auto-renewal terms, affirmative consent, and an "easy" cancellation mechanism. The FTC's parallel federal "Click-to-Cancel" framework is the federal version. If Skillshare's renewal reminder failed to arrive 3 to 30 days before the charge (as ARL requires), cite that and ask for a "good faith" refund. They sometimes blink.
- EU Consumer Rights Directive (EU/UK only). 14-day cooling-off period for digital purchases. Overrides Skillshare's 7-day policy if you are billed in the EU or UK. SEPA payments have a separate 8-week refund right under the SEPA rulebook.
- State attorney general complaint. File at your state's AG consumer-protection page. Skillshare is registered in New York; the NY AG's office is a credible escalation. AG complaints get forwarded to the company's legal team, not regular support, and Skillshare's response time changes dramatically.
One more lever: Skillshare's Terms of Service contain a class-action waiver and mandatory binding arbitration. Plaintiffs' firms have learned to flip that into mass arbitration, where each user files individually and the company pays per-case filing fees. Skillshare is already the subject of an active Video Privacy Protection Act investigation over Facebook pixel tracking. The firm running it may add billing-pattern complaints to the package. Signing up costs nothing.
The BBB complaint page for Skillshare Inc. is also a working escalation route. File with screenshots of your confirmation email and the later charge.
Route 3
The chargeback (when the other two fail)
Call your credit card issuer (the number on the back of the card) and dispute the charge. Chargebacks work best when you can point to a specific failure: a cancellation confirmation followed by a later charge, a renewal where no 30-day reminder arrived, or a denied refund inside the 7-day window. Visa and Mastercard both have specific dispute codes for "cancelled subscription billed anyway" (reason code 13.2 / 4853). Use the language.
Bring evidence: screenshots of the cancellation confirmation email (or absence of one), Skillshare's denial email, the charge on your statement, and the relevant section of Skillshare's current refund policy. Chargebacks against Skillshare succeed often enough that BBB complaints reference them by name. The catch: a successful chargeback will close your Skillshare account permanently, and Skillshare may flag the email for blocklist on any future signup. If you ever want to come back, do Route 2 harder before you do Route 3.
What not to do
- Don't accept "one free month" instead of cash. Skillshare's retention screen offers a discounted continuation in the cancel flow. Taking it almost always restarts your billing clock and forfeits any refund argument you had. Decline and move on.
- Don't reply "accepted" to a support email that calls the matter "resolved." Some Skillshare denial emails phrase the outcome as a final settlement. Acknowledging closes the support thread and gives a chargeback referee something to point at. Just escalate.
- Don't try to cancel a web subscription from inside the iOS or Android app. The buttons are not there. Users have believed they were cancelled and been charged for another year. Cancel where you subscribed.
- Don't file a chargeback for service you actually used. If you watched 40 classes over 11 months and now want a refund because you forgot to cancel, the chargeback will lose and your account will close. Routes 1 and 2 are for that case; Route 3 is for billing failures, not buyer's remorse.
- Don't assume the cancel email equals a refund. Multiple BBB and PissedConsumer cases show users with cancellation confirmation emails who were charged anyway in subsequent years. Save the email, then verify the charge actually stopped at the next renewal date.
The cancel flow itself (4 to 5 clicks)
The cancellation UI is not the hard part of leaving Skillshare. The refund is. But for the record:
Sign in at skillshare.com (not the app)
If you subscribed on iPhone or Android, this won't have a cancel button. Skip to the app-billed instructions below.
Profile icon → Account Settings
Top right of the page.
Left sidebar → Membership and Payments
"Cancel Membership" lives at the bottom of this panel.
Pick a reason, decline the discounted-continuation offer
The reason survey doesn't gate anything. The "one free month" offer that follows is optional. Decline.
Confirm. Check email for the confirmation receipt.
No confirmation email means the cancellation did not save. Repeat. Screenshot the confirmation when it arrives; you will need it if Skillshare charges you again next year.
iOS app subscribers
Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Skillshare → Cancel Subscription. Refund requests go through reportaproblem.apple.com, not Skillshare.
Android / Google Play subscribers
Play Store → profile icon → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions → Skillshare → Cancel. Refunds via Google Play Help.
Skillshare for Teams admins
No self-serve cancel button exists in the team dashboard. Email [email protected] with your account ID and the request. Response times are slow; start at least 30 days before your renewal date.
If you're also a Skillshare teacher
Time your cancel after the 16th, not before.
Teacher Fund Payments require your classes to hit at least 75 minutes watched during the qualifying period, and Skillshare processes payouts on the 16th of the following month. Cancelling your account before the 16th, with the threshold not yet met for the previous month, can forfeit that royalty. If you're close to the 75-minute line or near a payout date, wait it out before you close the account.
If you've already cancelled and notice a missing payout, email [email protected] with your class URLs and the qualifying period. Royalties owed before the cancellation are sometimes recoverable; royalties forfeited under the threshold are not.
Verifying the refund actually hits
Skillshare's refund timeline (when granted) is 5 to 10 business days. If 10 business days pass with no credit on your statement, reply to the original support email asking for a transaction ID. Don't open a new ticket; the old thread carries the context.
Set a phone reminder for 30 days before your renewal date next year. The single most common BBB complaint pattern against Skillshare is users who cancelled, got the confirmation email, and were charged again 12 months later anyway. The cancel sometimes doesn't take. The renewal-reminder email sometimes never arrives. A calendar nudge prevents the next $167.88.
Questions people actually ask
Can I get a refund on my Skillshare annual renewal?
Under the policy effective April 3, 2025, no. Renewal charges are categorically non-refundable in writing. Direct refunds only cover the first charge after a trial, within 7 days. If you're outside that window, your remaining options are chargeback, EU 14-day withdrawal claim (EU/UK only), or a state AG complaint citing California ARL.
Can I do a chargeback on Skillshare?
Yes, but pick your grounds. Chargebacks work best when Skillshare violated its own terms: cancellation confirmation followed by a later charge, no 30-day renewal reminder, denied refund inside the 7-day window. Call your card issuer, cite the failure, upload screenshots. A successful chargeback usually closes the account permanently, and Skillshare's TOS contains a binding arbitration clause that complicates further escalation.
I cancelled the same day they charged me. Why no refund?
Because the policy doesn't care. Renewal charges are non-refundable regardless of how quickly you cancel after they post. Documented complaints describe users charged at midnight UTC, cancelling at 11 AM, and being denied. Same-day cancellation prevents the next renewal, not the one already in your statement.
I subscribed through the iOS app. Can Skillshare refund me?
No. Apple holds the money. File at reportaproblem.apple.com; Apple's refund window is 90 days but outcomes are discretionary. Skillshare support will redirect you to Apple if you ask.
What happens to my access when I cancel?
You keep Premium until the period you already paid for ends. After that, total lockout. Skillshare eliminated its free tier around 2021. Half-finished classes, project drafts, downloads: gone from the app side. You can still log in; there's just nothing to watch.
I'm a Skillshare teacher. Will I lose royalties if I cancel mid-month?
Possibly. Teacher Fund Payments require 75 minutes watched per qualifying period and pay out on the 16th of the following month. Cancel before the threshold is met, or before the 16th, and the royalty for that month can be forfeited. If you're close to either marker, wait.
If you're auditing the rest of your learning stack
Skillshare is not the only annual plan running this play.
The "30-day reminder, midnight charge, 7-day refund window" loop is on most of the annual subscriptions on your card. Subcut spots renewals before they fire so you can decide ahead of time, not in the cancel flow at 11 AM.
