Downgrade Slack to the Free Plan
Export your data first (recommended)
Before downgrading, consider exporting your workspace data. Go to Settings & administration > Workspace settings > Import/Export Data. The free plan limits searchable message history to 90 days, so export anything important now.
Open Billing Settings
From your Slack desktop or web app, click your workspace name in the top-left sidebar. Select Settings & administration, then click Manage billing. You must be a Workspace Owner or Admin to access this page.
Click Change Plan Details
On the Billing Overview tab, click Change plan details. This opens the plan selection page where you can see all available options including the free tier.
Select Downgrade to Free
Choose Downgrade to Free. Slack will ask whether you want the change to take effect immediately or at your next renewal date. Select your preference.
Confirm the Downgrade
Click Continue to Checkout, review the downgrade details and what features you will lose, then click Downgrade Slack to finalize. You will receive a confirmation email.
Important: Only Workspace Owners or Admins can change the plan. If you are a regular member and want to cancel, you will need to ask your workspace administrator. Enterprise Grid plans cannot be canceled online and require contacting your Slack Account Manager directly.
What Happens After You Downgrade Slack?
Message history is limited to 90 days
The free plan restricts searchable message history to the most recent 90 days. Older messages are hidden from search but are not permanently deleted. If you upgrade again later, the full history becomes accessible.
Integrations and apps are limited
The free plan limits you to 10 app integrations for the entire workspace. Any integrations beyond that limit will be deactivated. Prioritize which integrations are most important before downgrading.
Unused time may be credited
Slack does not offer cash refunds, but if you downgrade mid-billing cycle, your workspace may receive Slack credits equal to the value of the unused portion of your plan. These credits can be applied to future upgrades.
Advanced features are removed
You lose access to features like group video calls, screen sharing, guest accounts, custom retention policies, SAML-based SSO, and compliance exports. Channels, members, and basic messaging all continue working normally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can any workspace member cancel the Slack plan?
No. Only Workspace Owners or Workspace Admins can access billing settings and downgrade the plan. If you are a regular member, you need to contact your workspace administrator and ask them to make the change.
Will I lose my messages if I downgrade Slack?
Your messages are not deleted. On the free plan, Slack limits searchable history to 90 days. Older messages are hidden from search results but still exist. If you upgrade again, the full message history becomes visible and searchable.
Will I get a refund if I cancel Slack mid-billing period?
Slack does not offer cash refunds. However, if you downgrade before your billing period ends, Slack may credit your workspace with Slack credits for the unused portion. These credits apply automatically if you upgrade again.
How do I cancel a Slack Enterprise Grid plan?
Enterprise Grid plans cannot be canceled through the Slack interface. You need to contact your dedicated Slack Account Manager or sales representative directly to discuss changes to your Enterprise Grid plan.
Should I export my data before downgrading?
Yes, it is strongly recommended. Before downgrading, go to Workspace settings and use the Import/Export Data tool to save your workspace data. This ensures you have a backup of all messages, files, and channel histories before the 90-day limit kicks in.
