What Happens After You Cancel WordPress.com?

Your content stays intact

All your posts, pages, and media remain on your site. Your site reverts to the free WordPress.com plan, so nothing is deleted. You can export your content at any time.

Premium features are removed

Custom domain mapping, premium themes, extra storage, and WordPress.com ad removal will stop working. Your site URL reverts to yoursite.wordpress.com if you were using a custom domain.

Your domain stays with you

If you registered a domain through WordPress.com, you still own it. You can transfer it to another registrar or renew it separately. Domain registrations are managed independently from your plan.

WordPress.com ads may appear

Free WordPress.com sites display ads from Automattic. Upgrading to a paid plan is the only way to remove them. Visitors to your site will see occasional advertisements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a refund from WordPress.com?

Yes. WordPress.com offers refunds within 14 days for annual plans and 7 days for monthly plans. After that window, your plan remains active until the end of the billing period but no refund is issued.

Will I lose my blog posts if I cancel?

No. All your posts, pages, and media stay on your WordPress.com site when you downgrade to the free plan. You can also export everything using the built-in export tool before canceling.

Can I transfer my WordPress.com site to self-hosted WordPress?

Yes. Use the WordPress.com export tool to download your content as an XML file, then import it into a self-hosted WordPress.org installation. Media files may need to be migrated separately.

What if I only want to cancel the domain, not the plan?

Domain registrations and hosting plans are separate purchases on WordPress.com. You can cancel or transfer your domain independently without affecting your hosting plan, and vice versa.

Can I downgrade to a cheaper WordPress.com plan instead?

Yes. Instead of canceling entirely, you can switch to a lower-tier plan. Go to your Purchases page and look for the option to change your plan. The price difference may be refunded or prorated.
