A July 2025 class action filing in Divney v. DoorDash called the cancel process "immensely difficult." The boring reality behind the BBB and Threads complaints: people cancel in the wrong place. DashPass has four billing sources (Apple, Google Play, DoorDash direct, partnership benefits like Chase Sapphire), and each has its own cancel button. Pick wrong and you keep getting billed.
Find the row that matches how you signed up.
| Billing source | Where to cancel | What gets cancelled | Refund eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| DoorDash direct $9.99/mo or $96/yr |
DoorDash app or doordash.com → Manage DashPass | DashPass only. DoorDash account stays. | No proration. 48-hr exception if unused. Annual plan: see Guarantee. |
| Apple App Store $9.99/mo |
iPhone Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions | DashPass only. Access ends at period end. | Apple discretion. Request via reportaproblem.apple.com. |
| Google Play $9.99/mo |
Play Store → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions | DashPass only. Access ends at period end. | Play Store: full refund within 48 hours of purchase. |
| Chase Sapphire Preferred / Reserve Free for 6 mo, then $9.99/mo |
DoorDash app, NOT Chase. Cancelling the card does not stop billing. | The paid auto-conversion. Chase card unaffected. | No proration. Dispute through Chase if billed past cancel date. |
| DoorDash Rewards Mastercard |
DoorDash app. Benefit ends if you cancel; resume by keeping card active. | DashPass benefit only. Card stays active. | No fee charged; no refund needed. |
| T-Mobile benefit | T-Mobile benefits portal (not DoorDash) | The carrier-linked benefit. | Governed by T-Mobile T&C. |
| DashPass Students $4.99/mo or $48/yr |
Same as DoorDash direct path | DashPass only. SheerID verification record stays. | Same as DoorDash direct. |
If you don't know which billing source you're on, open the DoorDash app, tap your account, tap Manage DashPass, and look at how the renewal is described. If you see "Subscription managed by Apple," it's Apple. If you see a renewal date in dollars, it's DoorDash direct or Chase auto-converted.
Start here if you have a Chase Sapphire card
The row most people get wrong. Chase Sapphire Preferred and Reserve include a complimentary DashPass period. Per Chase's February 2025 update, new enrollees get 6 months; older enrollments had up to 2 years. When it ends, DashPass does not stop. It auto-converts to $9.99/month billed by DoorDash. FrequentMiler flagged this: cancel inside DoorDash, not Chase.
- Closing your Chase card does not cancel DashPass. The auto-converted sub is now between you and DoorDash.
- Calling Chase cannot cancel it. They are no longer the billing source.
- Verify status: DoorDash app → account icon → Manage DashPass. A paid renewal date means it has converted.
- If already past conversion, cancel first, then dispute the charges through Chase. FlyerTalk threads show cardholders winning these.
Six missed months at $9.99 is $59.94 quietly gone. This is the single most common DashPass billing surprise in 2026.
Path 1: DashPass billed by DoorDash directly
The standard path: DoorDash app (iOS/Android) or doordash.com. Five steps; the only landmine is the second confirmation screen.
- Open the DoorDash app or sign in at doordash.com.
- Tap the account icon (bottom right on mobile; hamburger menu top-left on web).
- Select Manage DashPass.
- Tap End Subscription. You will see a reason-for-leaving survey, and DoorDash may offer a pause (typically 1–3 months) instead of cancelling. Decline if you want to fully cancel.
- Confirm on the second screen. This is where the cancellation actually registers. Pine AI's cancel guide puts this bluntly: "If you don't do this last click, they will keep charging you." Multiple consumer complaints, including a Threads post documenting three months of failed cancel attempts, trace back to this single screen.
A confirmation email should arrive within minutes. If it doesn't, check spam. If it still isn't there, the cancellation didn't register. Repeat the steps.
Path 2: DashPass billed through Apple
If you subscribed via Apple Pay inside the DoorDash iOS app, Apple bills you. The DoorDash app shows the subscription but the cancel control does not work; only Apple can stop billing.
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top (Apple Account).
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Find DashPass in the list. It may appear as "DoorDash."
- Tap Cancel Subscription (red text) and confirm.
Apple does not prorate refunds, but you can request a one-time exception at reportaproblem.apple.com if the charge is recent. Access continues until the end of your current billing period.
Path 3: DashPass billed through Google Play
Same shape as the Apple path: if you signed up on Android with Google Play as your payment method, Google Play bills you and only Google Play can cancel.
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile picture in the top right.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Tap DashPass.
- Tap Cancel subscription and confirm.
Google Play offers full refunds within 48 hours of purchase, a wider window than DoorDash direct. After that, no proration.
Sure you want to cancel, or do you want to switch?
Options DoorDash offers before the final cancellation:
- Pause for 1–3 months. Billing stops, account stays.
- Switch monthly → annual. Monthly is $119.88/yr; annual is $96. Break-even month 10. Full math here.
- DashPass for Students. $4.99/mo or $48/yr via SheerID .edu verification. Re-verify yearly or it reverts to $9.99 with no warning.
- Drop DashPass, keep DoorDash. Pay per-order delivery instead. Two delivery fees a month is usually break-even.
If none fits, cancel.
Cross-path gotchas that bite everyone
- Deleting the app does not cancel DashPass. Billing continues regardless.
- The 24-hour pre-renewal rule is strict. Cancel under 24 hours before renewal and DoorDash still charges the next period. JustAnswer documents cases of months billed for missing this window.
- No confirmation email = no cancellation. Threads and BBB complaints describe billing persisting because the second confirmation screen was never completed.
- Cancelling DashPass does not delete your DoorDash account. Account deletion is a separate flow under Account Settings → Manage Account.
- Free trials are unforgiving. Miss the Apple Pay one-tap trial window by an hour and you're charged the full month, no refund. This is the pattern the Divney v. DoorDash class action targets.
What about getting money back?
Three narrow windows:
- 48-hour unused-benefits window. Cancel within 48 hours of being charged with no $0-delivery orders since the renewal and support can refund. Not self-serve; ask.
- Annual Plan Guarantee. On the $96/year plan, if savings were less than the fee, request the difference via DoorDash's Annual Plan Guarantee page.
- Unauthorized charge dispute. For Apple Pay one-tap accidents or unnoticed Chase auto-conversions, escalate with "I did not use any benefit; please refund and confirm cancellation."
DoorDash's Terms and Conditions spell out the no-proration default.
Frequently asked questions
I have Chase Sapphire and never signed up for DashPass. Why am I charged?
Your card came with a complimentary DashPass benefit. For new enrollees as of Feb 1, 2025, the period is 6 months; older enrollments had up to 2 years. After it ends, DashPass auto-converts to $9.99/month billed by DoorDash. Cancel inside the DoorDash app under Manage DashPass.
Why does the cancel button do nothing in the DoorDash app?
Your DashPass is billed by Apple. Apple-billed subscriptions can only be cancelled in iPhone Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. The DoorDash app shows the subscription but cannot cancel it.
Can I get a prorated refund mid-cycle?
No proration by default. Access continues to the end of the current period. The 48-hour unused-benefits exception is granted case-by-case by support. Annual subscribers may qualify under the Annual Plan Guarantee.
Does deleting the DoorDash app cancel DashPass?
No. Billing continues whether or not the app is installed. Cancel through the correct billing channel (see the table).
Can I pause DashPass instead of cancelling?
Yes on the DoorDash-billed plan. Inside Manage DashPass you can pause for 1–3 months. Apple- and Google-billed users do not see this option.
