How to Cancel HBO Max (or Max, if You Subscribed Between 2023 and 2025)
The cancel button you need depends entirely on who is actually charging you, not which name the service is using this year. There are three price tiers and seven billing paths, and they do not cancel the same way.
Previously called Max, renamed HBO Max on July 9, 2025. Both max.com and hbomax.com resolve to the same service. The cancel paths below work under either label.
Find the path that matches who bills you
The single most common HBO Max cancel mistake: clicking around hbomax.com looking for a cancel button when the actual billing happens somewhere else. Match your situation in the table, then jump to that section.

Not sure which row is you? On hbomax.com sign in, open the Subscription page, and look for a "Billed through" line. Whoever is named there is your cancel destination. HBO Max keeps an official "find who bills you" page for exactly this purpose.
The three tiers, and why they all cancel the same way
HBO Max has three direct-billed tiers. Unlike Apple One or Amazon Prime, the cancel flow is identical across all three. The reason to care which one you have is the math: a Premium cancel in the middle of an annual term is a much bigger non-refund than a Basic mid-month cancel.
- Basic with Ads: $10.99/month or $109.99/year. Two streams, HD, no offline downloads, no live sports. The annual price works out to about 16% off the monthly rate, which lands the break-even at month 10.
- Standard (Ad-Free): $18.49/month or $184.99/year. Two streams, HD, offline downloads, live sports (NBA, NHL, MLB, March Madness). Same 16% annual discount.
- Premium (Ultimate Ad-Free): $22.99/month or $229.99/year. Four streams, 4K UHD, Dolby Atmos, up to 100 offline downloads. The annual plan saves $46 if you use the full year, costs you up to $115 if you cancel in month six. Same break-even math as our annual plan trap analysis on Spotify and YouTube.

Path 1. Billed directly by Max (web signup)
If you typed your card into hbomax.com or max.com, this is you. About three minutes.
- Sign in at hbomax.com (or max.com).
- Profile picture → Subscription (or jump to max.com/subscription).
- Scroll to the bottom → Cancel Your Subscription.
- Pick a reason. Many accounts then see a 50% off for 6 months retention popup (LowerMySubs reports ~60% trigger on accounts >1yr). On Premium, ~$69 saved. Decline if you want out.
- Confirm. Save the email. A Restart Subscription button stays on your Account page.
Paths 2 to 5. App-store and platform billing
Shared rule: cancel at the billing platform, not on hbomax.com. The Max app keeps working until the platform's period ends. Deleting the app cancels nothing.

The single most-missed cancel path
Path 6. HBO Max as a Hulu add-on
If you added HBO Max inside Hulu (not Disney+, not the bundle), Hulu owns the billing. The hbomax.com cancel button does nothing.

Path 7. Cable, satellite, or carrier billing
Your provider holds the contract. HBO Max cannot end the charge from its side.
- Spectrum: spectrum.com → Change or Cancel Services. JustAnswer threads show subscribers routed to phone. Plan for a call.
- AT&T: att.com/my → manage services. Phone fallback common.
- DIRECTV / DIRECTV STREAM: directv.com. Removal may require a package change.
- Verizon (Max + Netflix bundle): Cancel through Verizon; treated as a perk.
- Cricket Wireless: Included on $55+ plans. No a la carte cancel; downgrade or leave Cricket.
Ghost-charge gotcha: when you cancel the cable package, HBO Max often converts into a standalone digital sub billed direct. Check hbomax.com a week after the cable cancel.

Six gotchas that bite people the most
1. Deleting the app cancels nothing.
True on Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, smart TVs, iOS, and Android. Billing continues until you cancel at the billing source.
2. The annual plan does not prorate.

3. Discovery+ and HBO Max share most content.
Discovery+ still exists as a cheaper standalone. If you have both, you are paying twice for overlapping libraries. Pick one.
4. Cancelling cable can spawn a new HBO Max bill.
The hardware return does not cancel digital add-ons. Check hbomax.com a week after the cable cancel.
5. The Disney+/Hulu/HBO Max bundle is all-or-nothing.
You cannot peel HBO Max off the bundle. To stop paying for HBO Max specifically, cancel the bundle and resubscribe to whichever pieces you still want.
6. Free trial autorollover has no refund window.
If you forgot to cancel before the trial ended, the first paid month is non-refundable. Set a reminder for the day before the trial end, not the day of.
Questions people actually ask
Is the service called Max or HBO Max in 2026?
HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced the rename on May 14, 2025, and executed it on July 9, 2025. Both max.com and hbomax.com still resolve to the same service. If your Apple, Google, or Roku label still says Max, your billing is unchanged and cancelling under either name works.
I have the Disney+/Hulu/HBO Max bundle. Can I drop just HBO Max?
No. There is no selective removal. You have to cancel the whole bundle inside Hulu and resubscribe to Disney+ and Hulu separately. Hulu's own help article confirms it.
Will I get a prorated refund on the annual plan?
No. HBO Max does not prorate. Cancelling a $229.99 Premium annual in month four leaves you with access through the full paid year and zero refund. The Extra Member add-on is the only documented exception and does prorate.
How do I trigger the 50% off retention offer?
Start the cancel flow on hbomax.com. After you click Cancel Your Subscription and select a reason, the offer appears for many accounts before the final confirm. LowerMySubs documented a roughly 60% success rate on accounts older than a year.
I cancelled my cable but I am still being charged. Why?
Cable carriers often convert HBO Max from a bundled add-on into a standalone digital subscription when the cable package ends. Returning the hardware does not cancel the digital relationship. Sign in to hbomax.com, check the Subscription page, and cancel from whichever source it now lists.
I thought I had Discovery+. Why does my app show Max content?
After the 2023 Warner Bros. Discovery merger, Discovery+ content was folded into Max (now HBO Max). The standalone Discovery+ app still exists at a lower price point, but if your billing went through the merged service, you have HBO Max.
